Growth of Mould

Task

Hello young scientist!

Using the power of observation, you will discover how mould grows on our food and what environmental factors affect its growth. Follow the process to complete the required activities.

Process

The Experiment

  1. Put three pieces of bread in three separate zip lock pages.
  2. Take one bag and put it in a dark place (storeroom). Place the next bag in the refrigerator (staffroom). Place the last bag in a sunny area (window bench). Make sure each bag is sealed tightly. Label them clearly on the underside with your name and date.
  3. While you wait for the results, on Seesaw post your hypothesis as to what will happen to each bag of bread, make sure to comment on your class mates posts.
  4. Think about where mould grows naturally. What conditions does your child think are conducive to mould growth in nature?
  5. Check each bag daily to record any changes you see, and compare the results with your child's hypothesis.

Infographic

Click here to open Piktochart. Include in your infographic:

  1. What is mould?
  2. How to do the experiment?
  3. Your hypothesis and results.
  4. Display results from one of the test environments.
  5. Include something that took your interest or something new that you have learnt.

Here are some things to keep in mind when designing your infographic poster:

  1. Which information, facts, and data are essential to include? Which aren’t?
  2. What colours and layout works best in sharing the information?
  3. What graphics best convey information and data to the viewer?
  4. What is the order, or flow, of information?

Once complete, post save as a JPEG and post it on your blog post. Make sure to comment on at least three other posted infographic posters.

Blog post

Using your Seesaw account, post all your observations of your experiment and items of interest. Try and include:

  • Photos of your bread samples on a daily bases.
  • Hyperlinks to suitable websites of interest.
  • Post comments about observations and feedback on classmates observations

REMEMBER: your parents will be given access to your blog to see your progress, so do your best work.
