Hike through the Habitats!

Introduction

HIKE THROUGH THE HABITATS!

What is a habitat?

A habitat is a special place where plants and animals live.

In this lesson, you will learn about four different habitats: rainforest, grassland, desert, and tundra!

Here are some questions you should ask yourself while exploring the resources:

-What are special characteristics that this habitat has that others don't?

-What does this habitat consist of?

-What is the weather/climate like?

-What kind of plants and animals make up this habitat?

SCIENCE GLE for 2nd grade:

GLE 35. Identify the components of a variety of habitats and describe how organisms in those habitats depend on each other (LS-E-C1)

Task

What will I be doing?

-In order to start your trip, you will be partnering up at a computer station. As you trek through this webquest page, you will collect interesting facts about each habitat.

-Together, you are going to complete a KWL chart for each habitat along with taking any notes you wish in your science journal. I will not be asking you specific questions but you will need to explore the information good so that you are able to complete your assignment.

-After your trek is over, you will work together to choose your favorite habitat and create a shoebox diorama of the habitat. In the evaluation tab, you will see the rubric for this assignment. The things in the rubric are what I want to see in your diorama! I want you to learn, explore and have fun!

Process

These steps will guide you through your hike so you won't get lost!

1. Partner up and go to assigned computer to start.

2. Click on the link, KWL, and print out 2 copies,  for you (1) and your partner (1). They will be front and back. You will have 4 KWLs total, one for each habitat.

3. Click on the links of the habitat and begin!

-Grassland: http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/ss5/d/grasslands.cfm

-Desert: http://www.neok12.com/Deserts.html

-Arctic Tundra: http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/tundra

4. Fill out your KWL on each habitat by choosing what you think is most important and what is going to help you make your diorama. Don't forget the questions I gave you to ask yourself in the Introduction tab.

5. Reflect: Take the following notes in your science journal to monitor your progress and gather your thoughts.

-Which habitat is your favorite?

-If you were an animal, which would you want to live in? why?

- What would it feel like to live there?

-How is it different from where you live now?

-What do you think animals need to have to survive there?

After you've visited all the habitats, you and your partner will work together to create a Diorama of a habitat of your choice to display and share with the class. You can do this at home together with some help from your parents.  (SEE EVALUATION FOR RUBRIC)
