Identifying Rocks!

Introduction

Watch the following video and read the text below before starting your task. 

Have you ever tried to skip a rock on a pond or lake?

The world record for skipping a rock on water is 88!! (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/most-skips-of-a-skimm…) Think you could beat that record?

You can't just use any kind of rock to skip on water. What types of rocks do you think would work best to skip on water?

Task

This lesson will focus on the 3 differnt types of rocks Sedmentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic. You will learn how to identify the 3 different types of rocks as well as state some important information about them.

Process

1. You will visit the following link:

Here you will identify key facts and characterisitics about the 3 different types of rocks Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary. You can write them down on a piece of paper or type the information into a word document. 

2. Next, you will use the following link to watch a video on the 3 types of rocks.

Take notes on how you can identify the 3 different types of rocks.

You should now have gathered all of your information, from the two differnt sites, on your notes page or on you Word document. 

Can you identify any of the 3 rocks that you've learned about in the following picture? (use your notes!)

3. Now you will pretend you are a new scientist at a science lab. You will write a diary entry describing how a scientist identifies these 3 different types of rocks and some of their characteristics. (use the notes you took in steps 1 & 2). Include drawings or pictures to your letter so that the reader will have visuals to refer to.

Venture out around your house (under adult supervision) and find 3 rocks. Can you identify them from the new information you have learned? Have you learned which rock works best to skip on water?
