K Snyder's Anatomy and Physiology Webquest

Introduction

The study of anatomy and physiology is important, it allows us to better understand how are body works so that we can take better take care of them. There are 11 organ systems that have to work cohesively to keep us alive and active. This project will allow you to become an “expert” on one of these systems and become the teacher as your group introduces the system to the class.

Task

You are nursing students at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. An educational corporation has asked your class to serve as learning ambassadors to local high schools. Each group is will research and develop a lesson about the anatomy and functions of their assigned organ system. Groups will consist of 2 to 3 nursing students, which your instructor will put together at random. Each group will them draw “names” for their assigned organ system.

Process

Step A.

Identify your partner or partners (no more than 3 to a group)

Step B.

A group representative will then select a number from “Dr. Snyder’s” bowl, the number will represent a human body system which the group will conduct research on and develop  2 hour long lessons about.

1 = the integumentary system                         7 = the respiratory system

2 = the skeletal system                                       8 = the digestive system

3 = the muscular system                                    9 = the urinary system

4 = the nervous system                                     10 = the reproductive system

5 = the cardiovascular system                         11 = the endocrine system

        6 = the lymphatic system

Step C.

Student groups will then use, at least, 5 of the resources found on the following Resource page to research various aspects of their assigned body system. The following information should be acquired.

- detailed explanations of which organs make up the assigned system

- detailed explanations of the functions of each of these organs

- detailed explanations of how the system functions overall within the body

- models, diagrams or illustrations for each major system component (be sure to site sources)

- detailed descriptions of the common causes, symptoms and treatments for 3 diseases associated with the malfunction of the assigned system

***Be sure to site sources of your information ***

Step D.

Groups should then use their research to create:

1. an informational power-point, which they will utilize as their main presentation piece

2. a movie byte which provides a detailed look at how the system actually functions, this may be imbedded in the power-point or separate

3. an activity to check for students understanding/learning of the material that is presented... this can include a review game, a crossword, a worksheet or any other creative means of assessment

Step E.

The group will then provide a detailed “lesson plan” to “Dr. Snyder’ for approval. Once the group receives approval for their plan they will be given a date to teach their lesson at a volunteering local high school. ( In other words... in front of your classmates).

Evaluation

The following rubric will be given to the “class” you teach and an average score based on student reply will be the base of your project grade.
