Introduction
By Moshe Waxenberg, a Middle School Teacher
Students are called to the stage to perform a math play to increase the knowledge of how to teach. The students will be the teacher for the day.
You have been giving the chance to become the teacher of the day. I will select groups and each group will make a decision on who will become the teacher. The rest of the group members will be students and they will listen to the lecture. Remember this is a play, so everyone has to be active and once you have a group, you will have fun doing some scavenger hunt. Each group will recieve a eigth grade topic and you would have to do research either online or inside a math book. Have fun!
Task
Task:
Classroom Teaching Performance
Since this is a group project, everybody has to be on the same page. Each group will discuss who is playing what role. Four For each group so therefore one will be the teacher while the other will be the students listening to the lecture. When you guys are ready to present, the audience will get a better understanding of the topic that you will be discussing. The teacher will explain the problems to his or her students, but at the same time the teacher has to make sure the kids are behaving. Be sure to read the rubric, if you want to get a good grade.
Learning goals
In groups, students will create a scene from one of the math topics and you must brainstorm idea on what the script will look like. As a group, you will rehearse and practice your lines repeatedly. Sometimes changes will be made. So, it’s best to start the assignment earlier so you can be quick changes.
Levels
- Your topic that you researched must relate to the eight-grade concept.
- Understand how to form a play and write it down
- Identify idea and try to incorporate them in the play
Learning activities
- Make separate scenes if necessary (if multiple scenes, then announce them before you start the play)
- Brainstorm ideas
- Look at the classroom and write a stage so everything can be clear right away
- Please practice as many times so you guys aren’t stumble words on the stage
- Type the actual script so the words are clear
- After rehearsing, it’s time to act it out.
Including students
- Those who like acting out play, might be the leader of the group.
- Some students are very shy and might have little talking to do. Non-verbal acting is fine. That students can nod his or her head.
- Kids who like to write plays can edit the script.
- Some students may like to have lots of props. He or she can be the leader of collected the props.
Materials
To make a good script, you must do research online, on YouTube, or go to the library and find some good math books. Math books do provide good math example and explanations.
Assessment of learning
Before you start the real play, I need a copy of your script and what their roles are in the play. It student will evaluate on their own group and any comments on what you like and didn’t. if you have an issue explaining on paper, come talk to me privately after class. Since some of the work is in class, I will observe the groups and the behavior. Make sure everybody agrees and no one is excluded from the discussion.
Process

Each group will have a month to create a math play. There are different groups and each group will be selective to do a math concepts (the math concepts are giving below). Before you start, you have to know what are the math concepts and who is in your group.
Math concepts: (this is targeted to 8th grade students)
One Variable Inequalities
1. Solutions to inequalities
2. Graph Inequalities
3. Write ineqaulites from number lines
4. Solve one-step inequalities
5. Graph solutions to one-step inequalities
Since there are four people, each person will be somone
Part one. Who is going to be who
A. Teacher
B. Student
C. Student
D. Student
All four participants will be engage in the play. The teacher will teach one of the lessons above
Part two.
After being chosing a role. All four of you will have to do research on the concept. Since this is a 8th grade class, I will provide some links, but some links you have to do on your own with your group.
Part 3.
After you have done some researching, whether videoing or looking at problems through the web, you will have to creat a seven-ten minute play. The dialogue is all on the group.
Part 4.
There will be in time class and of course you will need to meet outide to rehearse if you want to perfom well.
Part 5.
In the plat you can bring props
1. Food (no gum)
2. Drinks (Water)
3. Pencils or pens
4. Makers
5. Rulers
6. If the teacher is make (can wear tie)
Side Information
In the play itself, since its a play, the students can get distracted, or misbehave, they can be funny, or helping another clasmate. The teacher does not have to teach full time. It could be Where the teaching is giving a quiz or a test. the student maybe will cheat and now the teacher(pretend teacher) has to get involve.

Handout in Dialogue |
No Written handout |
Some completed their Dialogue |
Dialogue completed but not in correct grammar |
Excellent In completing the assignment and turning in the final making of the dialogue |
|
|
Rehearse During class |
Did not get together as all to rehearse |
Talk for a few minutes but not being serious about getting work done |
Getting together to talk about roles and who is doing what |
Working hard on the materials and rehearsing the play repeatedly |
|
|
Teaching Method |
The teacher does not explain well at all. The audience is confused |
Some things are left and the whole idea of the math topic is not totally clear |
The fake teacher teaches in a good manner and takes his or her time to explain the math concept |
The fake student teaches excellent and the audience gets the whole idea of what is being taught in the plat |
|
|
Time frame |
No effort into this play and only a few minutes was acted out |
Did not reach its minimum amount and the ending could have been longer |
They reached the full amount. But too much silence in the play |
The cast members were active throughout the whole play and reached its time frame |
|
|
Teamwork |
No one agreeing with each other. |
Only agreeing to move the pace, but not agreeing on the dialogue |
They were agreeing with each other throughout their rehearsal. |
They all had enthusiastic about working together to form the best play |
|
Conclusion
After each group has presented their play to the class, each student will write down a paragraph on the pros and cons of the play. Each student will have to explained what they liked about the play and then they will have to explain in their own words on how to improve on their play. Remember when you watch each play, you have to take some notes down, so you can remember what to write down later. This play will not only build teammwork, but also on how to teach properly to other students. Be sure to write down your name on the topic and separate each group critique.

I provided each page with wording and some cliparts. Since my topic is math, all the cliparts are math images.

Teacher Introduction:
This Webquest is for students to learn more about math concepts. During the School Year there will be an opportunity for students to get into groups and each group will have to perform a math play. Students will have the chance to work as a team and to learn how to teach math concepts to their audience. The puropse of this exercise will allow students to be more aware of how to explain to other students on how to solve math problems.
