How   Will I Differentiate for…?

Gifted Students/Students Who Finish Early

Describe differentiated activity here.  Include description of any extra materials,   activities, groups, strategies, etc.

Gifted   students will be given a project menu for this lesson.  Included in the menu will be a continuum   for their project.  It will begin with   the lesson and what technology they chose and then it will have 3 tiers that   the students can choose from beyond that initial lesson.  This will allow the gifted students to   delve deeper into the content and work on this project at their own   pace.  Although the directions will be   explicit, the gifted students will be expected to organize their research   with minimal use of templates and teacher generated questions. The gifted   students will be expected to generate their guiding questions for this   research and then the teacher will conference with the independently to   review them.

Lower 25% Students/Students Who Need More   Time

Describe differentiated activity here.  Include description of any extra materials,   activities, groups, strategies, etc.

For   the research they will be given a template with guiding questions along with   links to websites and videos.  The   directions will be explicit, easy to follow and not too complex. They will   have a template to follow and the links to the websites will be included in   the template.  They will also be given   a research graphic organizer to help guide them through the research process   as well as, the product development process.

ELL Students

Describe differentiated activity here.  Include description of any extra materials,   activities, groups, strategies, etc.

The   ELL students will…

  •   Work with a peer buddy
  •   Be provided a research graphic organizer that includes section on   related vocabulary
  •   Have additional leveled books on the famous African Americans as   an additional resource
  •   Read resource books in a reading group with the students   highlighting key vocabulary and concepts introduced in the story.  (providing the some background knowledge)
  •   Have a research graphic organizer to guide them with step by step   directions that are very concise.
  •   Will have *checkpoints* throughout the lesson where they have to   check in with the teacher before they can go on to the next step. This will   allow the teacher to check in on their understanding of the directions,   comprehension of the material, and address any other things that may need   attention.
  •   A project rubric that gives outlines the expectations for the   project, offers differentiated expectations based on their needs and   abilities. This will not compromise the expectation but rather, support a   varied approach to the same material.
  •   Incorporate biography videos and recordings available for them to   use and revisit as needed.

Students with Disabilities

Describe differentiated activity here.  Include description of any extra materials,   activities, groups, strategies, etc.

To   differentiate this lesson for students with disabilities I would…

  •   Use more visuals
  •   Allow them more time
  •   Model each step of the lesson
  •   Group them with other students
  •   Read books in reading groups prior to lesson so allow them time   to interact with the material prior and to provide some background knowledge   for them
  •   Allow them to listen to the stories online again as needed
