Introduction
In 1922, archaeologists made an exciting discovery, the remains of an ancient city from a previously unknown civilization. They named this city Harappa. Shortly thereafter, and with help from local guides, they found another city from the same civilization. They called this one Mohenjo-Daro. Since that time, archeologists have found over 1400 cities from this same civilization. We now call this the Indus Valley Civilization, since the cities have mostly been found in the Indus Valley. The Indus River is one of the world's longest, and winds from the mountains in northern India through India and Pakistan until it reaches the ocean.
Even with all the discoveries. we still know very little about the people who lived in the ancient Indus Valley civilization. We do know that the civilization lasted about 1000 years from about 2500 BCE until about 1500 BCE. We know that they built large cities with straight streets and brick houses. We have found artifacts that suggest many other activities as well. There is no question at this point that this was a very advanced civilization. How advanced is still under investigation.
Task
For this task, you will be creating a booklet style museum exhibit showing different artifacts from the Mohenjo-Daro civilization. Also you must make inferences on each of the artifacts potential uses and importance.
Process
FOLLOW THESE STEPS IN ORDER
1. You will get into groups of two to complete this task.
2. Each group memeber will be responsible for helping to complete this museum exhibit task.
3. Once you have chosen your partner come to the front and get 7 pieces of paper that you will staple together.
4.Label the front page of the 7 that you stapled together the name of your museum exhibit.
5. Next go to https://www.harappa.com/slideshows/mohenjo-daro and choose the 6 artifacts you are going to pu tinto your exhibit.
6. Label each of the following pages in your museum booklet with an artifact you are going to use. You will use 6 artifacts from the website given.
7. Complete the sketch and summarize each of the artifacts and its uses while also telling about its relationship to GRAPES in a minimum of 3 sentences.
8.Raise your hand when you are finished until a teacher comes around to check out your exhibit!
Evaluation
Artifacts Listed: (3 points a piece;18 points total.) For full credit on this section of your museum webquest, you must have 6 artifacts on display.
Artifact Description: (2 points a piece; 12 point total.) For full credit on this section of your museum webquest, you must summarize each of the artifacts and its uses while also telling about its relationship to GRAPES in a minimum of 3 sentences.
Artifact sketch: (2 points a piece; 12 points total) For full credit on this section of your museum webquest, you must have a drawn sketch of each artifact used in your display.
Class Participation: (8 points) Participation throughout the class period will be graded as a part of your final museum display.
Conclusion
Now that you have expereinced and learned more about some artifacts from the ancient Indian civilization of Mohenjo-Daro, you should now be better equipped to understand the importance of artifacts. Artifacts are our ability to look back into the past and get a snapshot of what their lives may have been like and how they functioned throughout everyday life. New artifacts are being discovered everyday which allow historians to make more accurate predictions on the lives of the ancient people.
