Preconditions for Motivation:

1.  include creating a supportive, well-organized classroom environment

2.  assigning tasks that are meaningful, concrete, relevant, and of the appropriate difficulty level

3.  creating task-oriented classrooms

4.  rewarding students for effort and improvement

Techniques and Strategies for Motivation:

1.  Motivation and affect can be improved by engaging in practices to improve students' self-esteem, such as providing positive statements, assigning classroom responsibilities, and use of classroom peers.

2.  Student motivation improves when they participate in setting goals for themselves and assist in monitoring their progress toward meeting these goals. Contracts and parent involvement can also contribute to personal goal-setting.

3.  Students are more motivated to learn when learning is fun and interesting. Use a variety of approaches, media, game-like activities, and peer interactions to prevent classroom learning from becoming monotonous and routine.

4.  Students are motivated to learn when their accomplishments are acknowledged and rewarded.

Role of Rewards and Praise

1.  Use positive feedback and praise frequently.

2.  Use rewards, in the form of prizes, privileges, or tokens, when needed to acknowledge achievement and maintain persistence of effort.

Impact of Punishment

1.  Use punishment that fits the infraction.

2.  Use punishment as a means of learning how to handle negative behaviors appropriately.

3.  Should never be used as a method for humiliation or ridicule.
