Plant Webquest

Introduction

Be a Botanist!! 

Calling all third grade botanists (a botanist is a scientist who studies plants).  It is now up to you to become an expert on plants.  By the end of this webquest, you will be able to tell the different parts of plants, tell what each part does for the plant, tell why plants are important, describe the plant life cycle, and tell 4 interesting facts you learned about plants.  At the end of this webquest you will create a poster about plants.

Task

Your Task as a Botoanist is to:

1. Identify and label the parts of a plant.

  • Describe the function of each plant part

2. Draw and label/describe a the life cycle of a plant

3. Learn 5 reasons why plants are important and write about them

4. Find 4 interesting facts about plants and write about them

5. Create a poster to show what you learned about plants!

Process

This is how you can become an expert Botanist!!!

1. Copy/draw using the image from this website with the plant parts labeled. You must describe (the function/purpose)  each part’s job. Here is another link for plant parts. Another link for plant parts and their function.

3. Write about why plants are important. You must list and explain 5 reasons. You can go here to learn about the importance of plants.

Life Cycle of a Plant Illustrated 

The student's drawing is inaccurate or missing from assignment.  The student's drawing is somewhat accurate. Missing 2 or more labels. Some color is used.  The drawing of the life cycle and is mostly accurate (missing 1 label) and is colored. Overall, the quality of the drawing is good. Student effort is obvious.  The drawing is complete and accurate. Missing no labels and is colored. 

Illustrate a Plant/Flower 

The student has not included an illustration of a plant/flower which will predict the outcome of the criteria below.  The student has included an illustration that is somewhat accurate. Illustration is missing 2 or more parts of the plant/flower. Little color  The student has included an illustration of the plant/flower. They added color and the parts of the plant are obvious. Illustration is missing 1 part.  The student has included a 100% accurate illustration of the plant/flower. The drawing shows understanding of the plant parts and is colored. 

Parts of a Flower Labeled 

(root, stem, leaf, flower)

The student has not identified the parts of the plant/flower.  The student has identified 50-75% of the plant parts. The labels are not neatly written.  The student has clearly identified 75% or more of the plant parts. The Labels have been neatly handwritten.  All plant parts have been clearly identified and labeled. The Labels are neatly written. 

Function of Each Part Written 

The student has not included a written description of each parts function at all.  The student has not included a written description for the function of each part. They have written the functions of 25%-75% of the parts. 3 or more functions are not accurate.  The student has not included a written description for the function of each part. 75%-99% of the parts AND their functions are included. Student is more accurate on the functions of each part.  The student has included 100% written description of each part of the plant and its function. The description is neatly written with no mistakes OR 100% accuracy.
