Probability

Introduction

You are a Secret Agent on a mission to find a hidden treasure! You have to complete three probability challenges before you can find where the treasure is hidden! But wait, what’s probability? We need figure out what probability is before we can find the treasure!

You will be working in small groups to complete three challenges to find out what probability is and see what a probability problem looks like.

Task

You will be working in small groups to:

  • Use math vocabulary to describe the probability of events
  • Predict what might happen in an event
  • Write out probability using fraction form

There will be one page where you will find vocabulary about probability and then two probability games!

You will have a data log to fill out (on your own) as you go through each challenge on this mission. Click on the Process page to get started! Follow the directions under each challenge. After you have finished a challenge, come see me to check your work!

Process

Challenge 1: What is Probability?

For the first part of your mission, write out the definition for probability. Click on the link below to find the definition. Also write out or draw an example of the definitions on the bottom of the page. You will be doing an activity  on your first challenge to explore what each of these means when solving a probability problem! When you have written out your definitions bring your data log to me so I can check your work. You cannot go on to the next part of the phase of your mission until I have checked your work.

What is Probability? Click here to find out!

STOP: Have I checked your data log from Phase 1 of your Mission?

Challenge 2:

For your next challenge you will be playing  the probability game. Click on the link below to start the next phase of your mission! While you are playing, you will be writing if the probability was likely, unlikely, equally likely, impossible or certain on the chart in your data log. Write your answer before you check if it is right. You will do this 10 times, one for each of the items you might draw from the bag. Make sure you fill in both column in your data log! Follow these instructions to play the game.

In this activity, probability problem will appear on the screen.

  1. Move the mouse to the question mark and click to choose one of the 5 choices.
  2. After picking your answer, click the "Check" button to find out if its correct.
  3. To start a new problem, click on the broom in the upper right corner.

When you are finished, come see me so I can check your work before you move on to the last challenge. You're almost to the treasure, keep going!

STOP: Have I checked your data log from Phase 2 of your Mission?

Challenge 3:

After you have finished the first two challenges, follow the link below and complete your third and final challenge. Before you answer the question, write down the probability that the event would happen. Finish 5 questions and write down the probability of each on your data log! If you get one wrong, raise your hand and I will go over the problem with you!

For this game you will need to:

  1. Count each set of objects or pie wedges and find the total number shown to fill in your data log
  2. Count the number of objects for the color asked for and fill in your data log
  3. Write down the fraction form of the probability on your data log
  4. Answer the question given the choices
  5. Click Submit to check your answer and continue to the next problem
  6. When you have finished 5 problems, click Submit and FINISH
  7. Write your final score correct on the blank in your data log

Individual  Work

You worked with your group and helped everyone learn. You contributed to the group but I had to remind you twice to help your group. You did some work with the group but were distracting to your classmates.  I had to remind you 5 times or more to stay on task and help your group/
Vocabulary
You used correct definitions for all vocabulary or used a good drawing for representation.
You definitions were good but need more clarification. Your definitions need to be more complete.  There wasn't a definition for your vocabulary words.
Group work
Your group worked together and stayed on task the whole time. I only had to remind you once to stay quiet.
You stayed on task but I had to remind you to stay on task two or three times.  Your group was loud and I had to remind you to stay on task three or four times. You were very distracting to your classmates. I had to remind you to stay on task more than five times and you did not work together to complete your data log.
Worksheet   You completed the entire worksheet and got all three of the challenges correct You completed the worksheet and got two out of the three challenges correct. You were missing some answers on your worksheet and only finished one of the challenges. You left a lot of questions blank and did not finish any of the challenges.
Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed the three challenges and are about to find the treasure! When you are finished, bring your data logs to Mrs. Cuttino and tell her your favorite part about the Web Quest. When everyone is finished, we will all meet back to complete the final part of our mission and find the treasure!

You've made your way through all the challenges when you look up and find 3 doors! But which one has the treasure?

We will answer this question and see if we can find which one has the treasure!
