Introduction
What do you think a civilization is?
The definition of a civilization is the society, culture, and way of life of a particular area.
What are some of the things that make up our civilization today?
Some of the first recorded signs of civilization point to the River Civilizations, originating over 5000 years ago. Many of these ancient civilizations show similarities to our own modern society and have been thought to influence it. The four ancient civilizations that we will be learning about are:
- The Nile River valley civilizations
- Mesopotamia
- The Harappan civilization
- The Xia, the Shang, and the Zhou Dynasties of Early China
You each will be assigned to one of these groups to find out about their civilization.
Task
The class will break up into four groups. Each group will be assigned to one of the ancient civilizations including:
- The Nile River valley civilizations
- Mesopotamia
- The Harappan civilization
- The Xia, the Shang, and the Zhou Dynasties of Early China
What you will need to find out:
- Information about the society, culture, location, way of life, and anything that made that society unique
- How their ancient civilization has influenced our modern civilization
- Come up with three of your own questions to answer about the civilization
All of this information you will find through online resources, or physical resources from the library.
At the end of class each group should have a prezi prepared to share in the next class period.
Process
- Separate into groups.
- Discuss and come up with 3 specific questions aside from the ones assigned.
- Research information for your specific civilization. Remember that the information must answer all of the questions.
- Create prezi with information that answered the assigned questions and the ones your group chose.
- Present the prezi to the class. This will happen next class period.
Evaluation
Your assignment will be graded on content and oral presentation.
To receive full points:
- Your content must fully address the assigned questions.
- You should have 3 questions (and answers) aside from the ones assigned.
- You should have a prezi that is visually appealing and that your audience is able to read and understand.
- Each group member should participate in the presentation.
- During your presentation, speak clearly.
