Science Rocks!

Introduction

This WebQuest is designed for 5th grade students to explore the different types of rocks and the rock cycle.

Task

CONGRATULATIONS!  You have been chosen by The Geological Society of America to assist a group of geologists in their research and planning of a new rock museum.

You will be creating a video to present your findings to the group of scientists.  Your objective will be to convince the geologists to hire you in the design of the museum.

geologist is a scientist who studies rocks and minerals on the earth.

Click on the PROCESS tab to start your journey.  Click the EVALUATION tab to see how you will be graded on this project.

Process

Click on the image below BEFORE you start the WebQuest!!  Do NOT type directly into the document.

READ AND COMPLETE THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE:  After you click on the image, highlight the entire document.  Click on FILE and then NEW.  Click DOCUMENT.  Paste into a new document.  Click on the blue SHARE button in the top right corner of your screen.  Name your document.  (Name:ScienceRocks, Example: DannaRodebush:ScienceRocks).  Type in my email address (drodebus@fortsmithschools.org) and scroll to CAN COMMENT. Click DONE.  Then, return to this page.

**Be sure to fill in your answers on your Google Doc as you work through your research!!

1.  First, you will need to study the Earth's layers.  Go to the website and read about the layers of the Earth.  Record your answers in your Google Doc.

2.  Second, you will study about the Rock Cycle.

Move your cursor over the arrows to learn about the rock-forming processes involved in the rock cycle.  Record your answers in your Google Doc.

3.  Third, you will read about the 3 types of rocks and how they are formed.  Record your answers in your Google Doc.

**Now you are ready to present your findings to the geologists!  You will be creating a video to convince them to hire you to design their museum.  It is up to you to prove that you are knowledgeable about rocks and the rock cycle!

Take a look at a sample video with instructions about your own video expectations.  Once the video screen opens up, you will need to press play.

Create your own:

1.  Go to PowToon

2.  Click Log in at the top right of the screen

3.  Log in to Mrs. Rodebush's account with the login information she provided to you.

4.  Click CREATE.

5.  Choose your template and get started.

6.  When your video is finished, you will click on the PUBLISH icon (it looks like the less than sign) at the top right of your screen.

7.  Choose EDUCATION as the category.  Give it a title of your first and last name and click NEXT.  Click NEXT again and then click PUBLISH.

8.  After your video is published copy the link and paste it into this document:  PowToon Google Doc

You are now finished with the Science Rocks WebQuest!  Be sure that you have shared your Google Doc with me and that you have added the link to your video to the class Google Doc.
