Trains- The History of Trains

Introduction

Brandon Bishop, September 8

TRAINS...

They are some of the most powerful machines on earth. They can pull tons of cargo across the country. They are part of how stores get supplies, food, and more. They pull coal from mines to factories, which makes electricity for thousands of people. They can also take passengers from one place to another going faster than cars.

Task

This activity will inform students and teachers, or even hobbyists, about some of the history of the beginning of trains, you will also learn some science in train history, like how coal works in a train, and why it is needed.

In activity one and two, you will be reading and learning some history about the first trains, like where they came from and the genius that invented trains.

In activity three and four, will be science and reading. You will find the worlds fastest train speed recorded on conventional wheels, and other other science and reading activities.

In activity five, you will find out why steam trains use coal.

in activity six, you will draw and design your own train. It can be a steam train or a diesel train. It needs to be coulered neatly and drawn neatly. Make sure to make th train realistic as you can.

Process

You will be learning about trains from the past and trains that are in work now. There is interesting history in trains, almost everything about them, like how they worked, and looked. The tasks will be going on different websites and looking for answers about the history of trains.

1. History: The first task you will be doing is finding the origin of the first trains. You can look up where the first trains came from, and when they were made.

2. Reading: Another task is to find out who invented trains. You can look it up on your own, or look at this website to help find the answers...

3. Science: Find the train with the most horsepower using this website...

http://www.railserve.com/stats_records/worlds_fastest_trains.html

4. Reading: Also, find the world's fastest train speed recorded on conventional wheels.

5. Science: On this task, find out why steam trains use coal. Why do coal trains have them? What is the purpose? Find out why, by using a search engine and finding the answer.

6. Art: What you will be doing is drawing a train. You can draw any kind of train you'd like. You can draw your own, or draw a picture of a train that you find on the Internet. Draw the best you can, you will be graded on how much time was put into it. Make sure to color the train, you will get bonus if you color the whole train. Also make it realistic.

Evaluation

To check the answers, follow the links for the first 4 questions on the process. On question five, search up the question on a search engine, and find a trustable website that tells why steam trains use coal. Then, on the drawing, grade it by how much effort the student puts into the drawing, and the neatness. If the student put enough effort into it, give it 15 to 20 points, if little to no effort, give the drawing only 5 to 0 points. If the student colors the whole train, give them 3 extra points.

Make sure each answer is correct. One answer correct equals 5 points. If the student somewhat gets the answer correct, then it is worth 2 points.

Conclusion

If you finished this web quest, you should be able to know the basic history of trains. You should also be able to draw a train without even looking at a picture of it! Now you can drive your train into the sunset, and show off your knowledge of trains to your friends. If you learn enough about trains, you could teach the younger generation seeking to learn new secrets about trains everything you know about trains!

Now you can begin the long journey of a train driver.

This teachers page is good for teachers to show children. It is very informal about trains, and things kids will need to know about trains if you want to be a train hobbyist (Make a model train set) or make a future of a historian. You can even just to this webquest if you want to learn a little history about trains. These are interesting facts that you may not have originally known about trains.
