The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Web Quest

Introduction

Introduction

Charlotte Doyle is a typical thirteen-year-old, proper girl in 1832.  Her world has several similarities to ours today, but many differences.  Your tasks will involve learning about and presenting four topics relevant to this time period or to themes in the novel including: a Victorian lady.woman who made history, how to make knots used on boats, how Charlotte’s ship (a brig) compares to other ships, and proper etiquette and dress in 1832.

This group investigation will help you to understand aspects of the 19th century

and themes of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

Task

The Task

Your group will be learning about four different topics related to the novel.  You must decide who will take on each task to teach the others in your group.  Each group member will create an individual project.  As a group, you will then decide on a creative and original way to present all four topics together to the class.

Process

The Process

1.    The first thing your group must do is decide who will take each role.  They are described below in the four links.  You can also scroll down this page to view all four roles.

2.    Then each member will create their individual project following the directions provided.

3.    In the end, your group will create an original and creative way to present all four topics to the class.  This should not simply be each member showing their project.  Your group should find a way to connect the topics to one another.  You can find these directions by clicking on the “FINAL GROUP STEP” link or by scrolling down to the bottom of this page.

Roles:

1.  Finder of Feminine Fortitude

2.  Knowledgeable Knot Know-it-All

3.  Ship Specialist

4.  Etiquette Expert

FINAL GROUP STEP

1.   Finder of Feminine Fortitude

Charlotte took on a job that girls did not do in the 19th century.  Many women pave the way for others in a profession by being the first to succeed in that job.  Your job is to discover a woman who made history by taking on a profession or task typically done by men.  After collecting information on your chosen woman, create a way to present the information.  You must get your method approved by the teacher before starting it.  Some suggestions are:

a.    an informational collage

b.   a brochure

c.    a biography

d.   an electronic presentation such as Power Point

e.   an original creation of your own

You should include information such as:

  • What are her most famous accomplishments?  (What is she famous for?)
  • What was her childhood like?
  • How did she get started in her profession?
  • What motivated her to take on what she has?
  • What prejudices or hardships did she have to overcome?  How did she overcome them?

These are a few choices that you may use.  If there is a woman you are interested in learning about, you must get it approved by the teacher first.  This would require you to find your own information, instead of using the sources I have provided.  You may choose either: a. Emelia Earhart, b. Sylvia Earle, OR c. four of the six women on the last website I provide below because they have less information for each.

a.    Emelia Earhart

b.   Sylvia Earle

c.    Female Heroes of the 19th Century (choose 4 of the 6)

2.   Knowledgeable Knot Know-it-All

Charlotte had to learn how to tie different types of knots used on ships.  Your task is to learn about at least three of your choices from the websites provided.  The end result of your task should include:

a.    the background of each knot (where/when/why are they used?)

  • this part should be written, typed, or visually presented in some creative way

b.   instructions and a demonstration of how to tie the knots

  • this part should include materials to actually make the knots

  3. Ship Specialist

Charlotte traveled across the Atlantic on a ship called a brig.  This is just one type of ship.  Your   task is to compare and contrast a standard brig to two other ships.  You will create an original way to show the similarities and differences in any way you choose.  To make sure you are on the right track, check with the teacher before you start.  Your project should compare/contrast information like:

  • the sails
  • the size
  • the purpose(s)/jobs of the ships
  • appearance
  • any other interesting facts

Don’t forget pictures/illustrations/diagrams! (remember there is a diagram of Charlotte’s brig in the novel)

4. Etiquette Expert

Charlotte begins the novel as a proper girl of the 19th century.  Living in that century had many differences to living today.  Your task is to create a how-to pamphlet for people living in this time.  It can be focused towards young teens such as Charlotte, or adults.  You should include things like:

  • clothing styles
  • dinner/eating etiquette
  • hobbies/games/pastimes
  • school behavior
  • home responsibilities for children (make sure you are specific about where the child is living: farm, big city, etc.)

FINAL GROUP STEP!

Now that you have completed the four tasks individually, you must present them as a group.  This should be about 8-10 minutes long, but no longer!  Your presentation should be a creative way to inform the class.  You should not just have each member present their topic one at a time.  It should flow like one presentation, not four.   Be creative and get approval from the teacher before you create it.
