Types of Communities

Introduction

Your family is moving, but no one is sure where to live. Your parents ask your opinion about what type of community you want to live in - urban, suburban, or rural. You tell your parents that you need to do some research before deciding. You will gather information about each community to make the best decision.

Task

Research the three different types of communities - urban, suburban and rural.

Then, decide which one you would want to live in.

Finally, write an opinion piece explaining which community you want to live in and why.

Process

Step 1: Watch this video comparing urban, suburban and rural communities as a class!

Step 2: Visit this website

Step 3: Use the Interactive Map and follow the directions.

Step 4: Using what you learned from the video and the map, complete the quiz, titled "Are you a city person or a country person?" to help you decide which community you want to live in.

  • If you circle mostly A answers, then you might want to live in an urban area!
  • If you circle mostly B answers, then you might want to live in a rural area!
  • But, if you can't decide, you might want to live in a suburban area!

Step 5: Write an opinion piece explaining which community you want to live in and why.
