Unit 3: How Citizens Live Together

Introduction

You will learn about the responsibilites of citizens in a community.

You will learn about individual rights and responsiblities in a community. Then with your group you take on the role of being a community member. You must make a decision and support your decision with evidence. You will create an opinion writing.

 

Task

State your responsibility as a community member.

Then have the chance to take on the role of a citizen in their community and discuss a community issue.

Discuss the idea with your group. Make a chart to write down the benefits for each. Then make your decision. 

                                                        

Process

Part I

Step 1:

Learn about what makes a good citizen and your responsibilites by watching Brainpop. A password will be given to you by the teacher. 

Step 2: Fill out the paper community quilt square that shows what your responsiblity is.

Part II

You will have the chance to take on the role of a citizen in their community and discuss a community issue.

"Like many communities, our community never has enough money to buy everything it needs.  Therefore, our local government often has to make choices about how to spend money.  Our government is trying to decide whether to buy a new police car or new playground equipment for one of our parks."

Step 3:

Discuss the idea with your group.

Step 4:

Make a chart to write down the benefits for each.

Step 5:

Then make your decision. 

Step 6: 

Write your opinion down with evidence, on the paper Mrs. Roth gives you. Create a picture to go with your choice.
