Various Native American tribes have occupied different places throughout the country. One of the main tribes that occupied the West was the Ute Native American tribe. Utah actually got its name from the Ute tribe!
Task

Today we will be learning about the Ute Native American Tribe. The Ute culture has influenced the settlement and culture of Utah. We will study information about their culture and lifestyle. We will also be specifically focusing on one of their traditional dances: The Bear Dance. After learning about the Utes, you will need to choose a project to show what you have learned using material from the lesson.

- When you have finished learning about the Ute tribe, come into the classroom to see and handle some traditional Ute clothing and artifacts. I would love to take them out of storage for you to see during class free time!
Creation
Now that you have learned all about the Ute tribe, you get to write an essay, a RAFT, record an oral/video report, or create a Storybird!
- If you choose to write an essay about the Utes, make sure you have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Your essay should be at least one page (12pt font) and include 5 vocabulary words. Your essay can either be informational or a story about the Ute people and the Bear Dance.
- If you choose to write a RAFT, your paper should be at least a page (12pt font) and include 5 vocabulary words. Role choices: Ute Native American, Ute Chief, news reporter, or pen pal. Audience choices: the general public, a news reporter, fellow Ute Tribe members, members of another tribe, or pen pal. Format choices: letter, email chain, or public address. Topic choices: (You will need at least 2 including the Bear Dance.) Ute Bear Dance (required), Ute culture, Ute people, or Ute traditions.
- If you choose to create an oral/video report, you will need to record yourself talking to me about what you have learned throughout this lesson. Make sure you use at least 5 vocabulary words. Your video should be somewhere between 5-10 minutes. You need to include information about the Ute tribe and the bear dance.
- Storybird is an incredible tool to use for creating your own story using great artwork. If you choose to create a Storybird, you will need to have at least 10 pages in your story, and include 5 vocabulary words. Your Storybird should be about what you think it would have been like to be a Ute Native American. Make sure you use information from this webquest! Part of your story should include your character watching or participating in the Bear Dance.
