Veterans Day Scavenger Hunt

Introduction

This scavenger hunt is designed to help educate students on the importance of Veterans Day and other related areas.  Students seem to know that this is a day where they do not have school, but many do not really have an understanding of why it is observed.  By using the Internet and the addresses given, they will need to answer the questions below.  This in turn should help the students understand why we observe this holiday.

Task

Today students will be given the chance to learn about Veterans from many wars and when these wars took place.  They will also get a chance to see some memorials from different wars.

Students will need to have the "Handy-Dandy" Veterans' Day Handout.

Process

Today you are going to be looking for information about Veterans' Day.  The first task you will have to day is to discover what Veterans' Day is and when it began.

First, you will need your "handy-dandy" Veteran's Day handout.  Using the websites below you are going to look up the information need to complete the handout.

Who is a Veteran?

After what war did Veterans' day become a holiday?

Who does Veteran's Day honor?

What was Veterans' Day called in the past?

Now you are going to learn a little bit about some of the wars of the past.

The first war you will learn about is called World War I.  This war was previously called The Great War.  World War I began June 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918.

Woodrow Wilson tried to keep the United States out of this war, but in 1917 America joined in the war.

Read this poem about World War I and then answer the questions on your "handy-dandy" handout.

Poem by John McRae.

World War II was fought almost thirty years after World War I.

Look at the following posters from the World War II era.

Poster 1                Poster 3

Poster 2                Poster 4

After World War II America was involved the Vietnam Conflict.  America was involved from 1956 until 1973.  Today visitors can visit the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. to honor those who died in Vietnam.

Memorial

Lastly, today is a day not only to honor those who have died in war, but also those who are still fighting.

Look at some of the memorials that honor those who fought for different countries and those in the United States.

Australian War Memorial

Canadian War Memorial

Moscow (Russia) War Memorial

Vietnam War Memorial

Now create your own memorial to honor Veterans who have served America.

Conclusion

Veterans' Day is an important holiday where everyday citizens get the opportunity to honor those who serve America.

If you would like to learn more about Veterans or the wars of the past go to learn more!!!

Teacher Introduction

This lesson is set-up to help students read and find information to answer questions by using the Internet and the addresses given.   This in turn should help the students understand why we observe this holiday.

Veterans' Day is to be an honorable day.  This is what I have tried to create in this webquest.
