Task
ake students through the case study of Ellen Devitt-- killed herself at 14 due to bullying for her sexual orientation-- provide links to her memorial website, news articles on teen suicide due to bullying, links to copies of her video blogs where she discusses her pain, links to videos of other students disusssing bullying in their schools, links to WI anti-gay marriage laws pro/con
Process
- ask students to reflect on the answer-- is homosexuality nature/nuture/neither/both, what are their thoughts? What can be done about bullying-- should something be done? Link them to "What to do if you kid is bullied" sites, and "how to respond to bullies" sites. Link to psychologist as well as other students giving advice, link to videos of homosexual kids offering advice on how to deal with their sexual orientation.
Conclusion
- Finally, end the webquest with a summary of what you hope they walk away knowing (# of kids bullied for Sexorientation, nature nuture debate, etc-- what facts do you want to be sure they remember?), and a GREAT link to a wonderful closing item-- maybe a video of Matthew Shepard's story.
