WOULD I LIKE TO LIVE THERE?

Introduction

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live somewhere else? Maybe in another part of the world? Do you wonder how life in that part of the world is similar or different to yours? In this webquest you will be taking a journey to various places in the world to learn what it is like to live there!!! After your journey is done, then you will make a decision if you would like to permanently move there.

Task

Your job is to work with a travel team to learn all about the life and habitat of a child in another part of the world. ***Here are your team assignments.

1--Keep a travel log as you journey through the country of a child in another part of the world.
2--Make a "Window to the World" poster that will show all about the life of a child in your team's country.
3--Write a child from that country to ask other questions you have about their life.
THEN--Take a vote in your team and poll the class to see who would would want to trade places.

Process

Your class will be broken up into four groups. Each group will travel to a different part of the earth to explore the world of a child.

Is their life different from your own??

Would you want to trade places with them??

Evaluation

Now that you have finished Tasks 1, 2, and 3, here are some things to ask yourself. Rate yourself after thinking about how you did each task. If you answered all of the tasks questions with a yes, give yourself a 3. If you answered at least one question with a yes, give yourself a 2. If you answered no questions with a yes, then give yourself a 1. 
 
Task #1--Did you find out what the habitat was like in your place and record it in you journal log? Did you discover some animals found in your place and write down at least one? Did you record what life is like for the people in your place? Did you shade the location of your place on the map in your journal?

Introduction

This lesson is to give students an opportunity to learn about other countries and the culture of the people that live there.

Learners

This WebQuest was designed for third grade ESL students (beginner to advanced), but can be easily adapted for grades 2-5. This project integrates Science, Social Studies, Communication, Arts, Reading & Writing.

The students will need to have basic skills on how to navigate the internet.

Curriculum Objectives/Standards

Objectives:
The students will conduct research to answer questions and evaluate information and ideas.

The students will use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize information.

The students will comprehend and evaluate written, visual and oral presentations and works.

The students will plan and make written, oral and visual presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences.

The students will exchange information, questions and ideas while recognizing the perspectives of others.

The students will use technoloical tools to exchange information and ideas.

Process

This WebQuest will take several computer sessions to gather the information for the log and then additional classroom time to complete the poster and letter. They will need to have basic skills on navigating the web.Students will need to be broken up into groups and assigned a location to explore. They will need to get the journal log to begin their research. Either you can print out a log and make copies for them or you can let them print off a copy from the WebQuest itself. When they have finished task 1&2 and are ready to correspond with someone from their place, supply them with a name and address.

Resources Needed

  • The students will need individual copies of the log to record information.
  • They will need 1-poster board to make their window frame from.

The computer research portion of this activity would be a great time to enlist parent volunteers to help the students navigate the internet.

Evaluation

Evaluation of student achievement will be done mainly by the students themselves. The teacher can evaluate the oral presentation of posters and the correspondence to check level of achievement.
