Where do animals live?

Introduction

We are excited to learn about where animals live! You will be a detective and it is your job to try to figure out where the animal likes to live. Does your animal like hot or cold weather? Does it like living in mountains or fields? Does your animal like lots of water? What do you think is best for your animal? We will have fun investigating and researching our animals.

Task

The Task

We will be having so much fun while we learn about animals. We will  research where our animals like to live. You will identify what the animal needs to live and be healthy. You will pick out the best place for your animal and create a diorama of where that place is.

The end results of the learners' activities will be:

  • Analyzing the health of the animal
  • Solving best living conditions for the animal
  • Learning responsibility to care for the animal
  • Be creative while building a diorama

Process

The Process

1. Every student will be assigned an animal from all different environments. This video will help you understand different habitats of animals.

  • You will need to analyze your animal. Think if you have seen this animal anywhere familiar.
  • Make a hypothesis on where you think this animal is from.
  • Use your tablet to research the native area and compare to your hypothesis.

2.  While doing your research find:

  • Where your animal lives.
  • What weather it likes.
  • What it needs to grow.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Wonderful!!! You have learned what your animal needs to grow and how to responsibly care for them. Not only did you get to learn about animals, but you've learned about different environments too. In the process of this project you have developed skills to be able to research information. You are great detectives and uncovered a lot of information in this lesson.

Teacher Page/Guided Lesson Plan

On this page, you will include an overview of the purpose, objectives, and learner description, along with the standards students will meet when they complete this WebQuest. This guided lesson plan will support teachers as they introduce students to your WebQuest activity.

Purpose: The How Plants Grow WebQuest is intended to support student learning in a variety of ways. First, the WebQuest encourages students to examine what plants need to grow. Secondly, they analyze what environment the plants live in to receive their needs. Lastly, we will use technology to understand these things.

Rationale:

Building an understanding that everything has different needs. They will learn

how to be responsible for their plant to make it the healthiest it can be.

Learner Description:

This is appropriate for 3rd graders that are beginning to learn about environments along with responsibilities.

Prerequisites:

 Students should understand the following…

 · Reading on a 3rd grade level

 · Basic Internet navigation and research skills

 · Be able to present in class

Instructional Objectives:

When the students complete this WebQuest they will be able to:

 · Explain what plants need to grow

 · Identify different environments

 · Create a diorama

Standards Addressed:

The West Virginia Content Standards and Objectives are addressed in this WebQuest. There are objectives that deal with science as well as group work. See the Teach 21 website for the interactive CSO’s

Grade 3

  • VA.O.3.1.04 create a three-dimensional model and/or an architectural structure.
  • S.3.GS.7 construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
  • S.3.GS.8 make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem cause when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.
