Fractured Fairy Tales Webquest

Introduction

In this unit, you will be studying the elements of traditional fairy tales and record you observations in their "Fairy Tale Scrapbook". Through this exploration, students will learn about famous fairy tale creators such as Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm.

Did you know that the Disney movie fairy tales that you have seen are a much newer and updated version of fairy tales from long ago? Even famous movies like "Frozen" or "Cinderella" had their beginnings as a fairy tale told in another country many years ago.

By learning about the history of fairy tales and reading some familiar ones as well as some ones you may have never read before, you will then be a fairy tale expert!

Task

With your partner, you will first read a selection (at least three) of fairy tales listed. Then, pick one of the fairy tales you read and create a fractured version of it. A fractured fairy tale is a unique take on a traditional fairy tale story. One of the most famous fractured fairy tales is The Stinky Cheese Man by Jon Scieszka.

Once you have written your fractured fairy tale (remember to use the writing checklist in your writing folder!), you will then complete a venn diagram to compare and contrast your fractured fairy tale to the original version.

Process

1. With your assigned partner first select three of the listed fairy tales to read together.

The Twelve Brothers

Rapunzel

Hansel and Gretel

The Princess and The Pea

The Snow Queen

2. From the three that you have read, with your partner, decide which one you are going to rewrite as your fractured fairy tale. Be sure to think about which elements you are going to change. You can change the main character (protagonist), the villian (the antagonist), the setting, the problem, the solution, a key item or event or anything else you can think of!

3. Using your writer's checklist, work together to create your fractured fairy tale. You are welcome to either hand write your final using your nicest, neatest handwriting or type it using "pages". Be sure to include the title of the fairy tale you have decided to change!

4. Once you have turned in your final version with both partners names on it, complete the venn diagram worksheet comparing your new fairy tale to the original.

This webquest was created with my reading group in mind. This group is made up of students who are reading at a range of end of third grade to middle of fourth grade reading level. They are all independent workers and are experienced at writing paragraphs and using a checklist to edit their own work. This is the summative assessment used for the fairy tale unit that is a supplemental part of my reading curriculum.
For more emergent readers, I would suggest creating a fractured fairy tale as a class.
to further this project, I would also have them watch a few fractured fairy tale videos on youtube or discoveryeducation.com.
