Year 6 Asian Research Project

Introduction

Australia and its engagement with Asia priority provides a regional context for learning in all areas of the curriculum especially in Society and Environment. It reflects Australia’s extensive engagement with Asia in social, cultural, political, and economic spheres.

Many Asian nations are growing rapidly and are regionally and globally influential. Immigrants from all these countries have historically contributed to Australia’s development and will continue to do so in the future.
Students will learn about and recognise the diversity within and between the countries of the Asia region. They will develop knowledge and understanding of Asian societies, cultures, beliefs and environments, and the connections between the peoples of Asia, Australia, and the rest of the world.

What encompasses Asia?

Asia can be defined in geographical terms, but it can also be described in terms of cultural, religious, historical and language boundaries or commonalities.

While it includes West and Central Asia, in Australian schools, studies of Asia will pay particular attention to the sub-regions of:

· North-East Asia including China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan

· South-East Asia including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam

· South Asia including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Task

Your task, Year 6, is to research a given Asian country and complete all components of this project by Week 7.

Whilst there is a task due each week you will also spend time researching and preparing your oral presentation, triarama and written report.

Your project will have one component due each week.

  • Flag and language spoken (week 2)
  • Map (week 3)
  • Tirarama (week 4)
  • Brochure (week 5)
  • Oral presentation (week6)
  • Written Report (draft week 6, final week 7)

Rubrics for each reportable task can be found under the Evaluation Tab.

Framing the task:

The aim of this project is for you to engage and learn about a particular country in Asia that has strong ties with Australia. At the end of this project, hopefully you will understand the ways in which our own country and Asia rely and depend on each other and the similarities and differences they have, as well as having a comprehensive knowledge of the way of life in your country.

Week 4

Making your triarama.

Your triarama forms part of your oral presentation.

During your oral presentation your triarama supports and or illustrates what you are saying.

Your plan for your triarama goes together with your plan for your oral presentation.

Week 5

Next is a brochure!

You will have to make a brochure advertising how great your country is and give reasons why people should travel there (especially Australians!)

Use the information you have been gathering on your data chart!

In your brochure you must include:

Information about the culture

What tourism is like

Trade (between your country and Aus)

Education system

What the defence force is like

Why people should go there!

I would like you to make your brochures as colourful, creative and informative as possible. They can be hand written/drawn or completed on the computer, but they must be neat and legible!

In this news bulletin you must include:

These will be shown to the rest of the class!

All of the activites that you need to complete are informative to you and alsoo fun, so I expect all work to be completed on time. If you have any questions just come and ask me!
