You Rock!

Introduction

Rocks are an important part of our world and can be found everywhere! They have been around for ever, since the beginning of the Earth, and are divided into 3 groups based on how they were formed. For this students will be introduce to all three types of rocks. Each student will get to be a rock detective and learn how they were made! Students will earn points based on the knowledge they obtain through rock cycle activities and reading materials.

Task

Standard: 3-3.1 Classify rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic

Lesson Objective: Students will learn about the 3 different types of rocks. Students will use their textbook and the internet, to become detectives and find the characteristics and properties of the 3 types of rock to help them classify the rocks into groups. Students will create a class presentation on the 3 types of rocks.

Process

1. Each student will placed in a group of 3. Each student will research one of the 3 different rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic)

2. Each student will visit the following link to learn about rocks.

Link 1: http://www.learner.org/interactives/rockcycle/types.html

After viewing the site, each student will answer questions under Test your skills

Link 2: http://www.learner.org/interactives/rockcycle/testskills/

3. Each student will be encouraged to view the next link (link 3) and read a short passage on the types of rocks, paying close attention to the one they have chosen.

 Link 3: http://quatr.us/geology/rocks/

4. Each team member must discuss the questions provided and place their answers in their Science Journal.

     Questions:

   1. What are the differences between Metamorphic, Igneous, and Sedimentary?
   2. What characteristic do these categories have in common, if any?
   3. What are all the characteristics for a Metamorphic rock?
   4. What are all the characteristics for an Igneous rock?
   5. What are all the characteristics for a Sedimentary rock?

5. Lastly, the team needs to decide how to present the information they've gathered to the class.

Completion of background information Student have no documentation to support their research. Students have documentation but it is not relevant to the project nor cohesive. Students have gathered accurate information but did not complete all work. Students have all the documentation to finalize their project and have completed all worksheets.
Knowledge of the rocks 1 out of 3 students know about the rocks. 2 out of 3 students vaguely know about the rocks. All students know majority of the information, but still need help memorizing certain parts. All three students know the song and can recite the about the rock without looking at their papers.
Science Journal Entry  Student did not record questions and answers in their journal. Student recorded the questions but the answers were not written in complete sentences. Student recorded the questions and answers show basic comprehension of the properties all three rocks. Student recorded questions, answers, and revealed higher- level thinking in his/her answers.
Presentation  Group presentation is not visually appealing and does not have all key components as listed in the directions. Group presentation is visually appealing but does not contain the properties and characteristics of the three types of rocks. Group presentation is not visually appealing but includes  properties and characteristics of the three types of rocks which they can use to divide or classify rocks into groups. Group presentation is visually appealing and includes properties and characteristics of the three types of rocks which they can use to divide, or classify rocks into groups.

Conclusion

Learning the 3 types of rocks and how they form is an important part of our Geological and Scientific studies. In conclusion, I hope that the activities and lessons were beneficial and entertaining!

This webquest is intended to be interesting and a fun based learning experience for 3rd graders!

They will learn about the different types of rocks. When finished with the webquest students should be able to identify, classify, and learn to make the different rocks.

Standard: 3-3.1 Classify rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary, metamorphic)

This webquest is for third graders but can be modify for any age group or for any student needs.

This work needs an ample amount of time it could also be extended over several days.
