Ms. Motiwala's Third Grade Area and Perimeter Math Quest!

Introduction

Do you ever get tired of memorizing math formulas?  Do you wonder what they have to do with real life?  In this webquest, you'll learn a few formulas (it is math, after all).  Beyond just memorizing them, you will use these formulas in a real world situation while showing off your own individual style!

You will explore area & perimeter using a variety of web based resources.  Then, you and your group will construct the floor plan for a house and create a housing construction company with a unique name and logo! The objective is to capture customers' attention and sell a Dream House, the floor plan of which you and your team will create!

Let's get started!

Task

1. Go to Area & Perimeter: All You Need to Know. You and your 2 group members will work through the 3 levels on perimeter & the 3 levels on area.  You will need to record your answers on a piece of paper (just 1 per group), as well as how you figured them out.

2. Next you will watch this video and complete the short interactive games and activities. Don't forget to note when perimeter measurements are used and when area measurements are necessary!

3. Your group will now work together to sketch the floor plan for your house. This sketch is to be completed on graph paper. If you do not have graph paper click here and print a page. Your floor plan must have at least 5 rooms (kitchen, living room, bathroom, and 2 bedrooms). Your group may choose to build a larger house with additional rooms (office, workout room, game room, etc).  Note that each square on the graph paper represents one square foot. Be sure your rooms are a reasonable & realistic size (a bathroom will need to be large enough for a shower, toilet, and sink).  You may use a tape measure to measure the rooms if necessary. You may also click here to see some examples of real life floor plans!

4. Once you have sketched your floor plan, you will need to figure out how much baseboard you need in each room, as well as the amount of carpeting you will need. Use the "Dream House" sheet. Show your work in the space provided!

5. You can color in the different rooms of the house with markers or color pencils and brighten up your hard work! Don't forget to label each room.

6. With your group, come up with a company name for your housing construction business. You can find resources that will help you design the logo and create a catchy name on the Process page. Along with the company name, you will need to create a business logo.  You've worked hard on your house and you need a catchy name and logo to capture people's attention! The object is to sell the house right?  Your last task is to staple all your work together in the form of a booklet and should include: Business name and logo as the cover page, recorded answers from the area and perimeter quiz website, the Dream House sheet, and the floor plan. Don't forget to write down your team's name!

Process

1. Here is the website you have to use to learn all about (or brush up on) Area and Perimeter, and practice some questions before you start drawing the floor plan of your new house! Don't forget to record your answers!

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/peri…

2. Here is the website you need to learn how to calculate the perimeter for the baseboard of every room in the house, and calculate the area needed for carpeting each room. Have fun!

http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mesg/html/math6web/index.html?page=l…

3. Here is a link to print graph paper in case your team does not have any. You need graph paper to help you draw a floor plan. Please click on 'free PDF download' in order to print:

4. Here are some examples of how you can draw your own floor plan. Please be sure to include at least 5 rooms (2 bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, living room) but you can definitely include as many as you want (study room, library, laundry room, office, fitness room, dining room, etc.). Be creative and don't forget to listen to your team mates' ideas!

6. Here are some helpful kid-friendly websites for creating business names and logos! They are free and you can print out your name and logo and attach it as a cover page to your floor plan, dream house sheet, and area and perimeter quiz answers.

Conclusion

There you have it, folks!  You've learned how to find area and perimeter of rectangles and squares and used this knowledge for a real world application.

Bonus (for extra credit): Can you think of any other real world situations using area and perimeter?

We will continue our exploration of area and perimeter by connecting what we learned today to triangles, trapezoids, and other shapes!
