20th Century Technological Advances

Before the radio, people had to go out to hear a band play their favorite song, they would have to go to a baseball game to know what happens, and they could only get their news from the paper. In 1920s the radio swept the nation, everyone was listening to the radio for music, sports and the news, it was the smartphone of the 1920s. But towards the 1950s the television started to replace the radio in people’s homes and gain popularity. The TV changed how people got entertainment, and their news. Then in 1977, the first home computer was invented, and without it we wouldn’t have the first home computer, we wouldn’t have the computer we have today.

This website shows all of the technological advances in the 20th century year by year, not just radios, computers and televisions. This is a great website to show the advancements that were made every year in the 1900’s. As you will see, radios started to become more advanced and more popular in the 1920's to the 1940's, unlike the television and computer that started to become popular in the late 1950's to present day in the 21st century.

The radio and the television were major agents of social change in the 20th century, opening windows to other peoples and places and bringing distant events directly into millions of homes. Although Guglielmo Marconi was the first to put the theory of radio waves into practice, the groundwork for his feat was laid in the 19th century by James Clerk Maxwell, Heinrich Hertz, and Nikola Tesla. Maxwell theorized and Hertz confirmed the feasibility of transmitting.

This link talks about televisions and how they became popular in households all around the United Sates of America. It talks about how watching television became more of an everyday activity due to the increase of affordable televisions being sold and the amount of channels being created like BBC, ABC, NBC, and CBS.

This website tells the reader about the first radio broadcast in 1920. In 1920 the KDKA came out with the first radio broadcast. Although not many herd it the radio became the hot new item at the time. This website also discusses the types and transformations of the radio throughout the 20th century.

This 45 minute video shows how the radio was created and that the reason that a radio because of war. Although that sounds far fetched, the video explains that radios provided immediate communication between squads and different parts of an army. It also goes into the technology of how the radio used to work and how Marconi increased the range of the radio. Fezington, a scientist, transmitted the first sounds through the radio, the first of it’s kind that would change the radio forever.

This link leads to a timeline for the evolution of computers. How it went from a huge machine that filled a huge room to something that was in everyone's homes. It’s a good visual to show the reader how fast computer developed so fast. The timeline goes year by year and talks about what computers were like that year.

This article talks about how home computers revolutionized the world. It talks about how the computer was originally used in homes for gaming and word processing. It also talks about how it went from just used for gaming and word processing to the world wide web. Because of this everyone became connected and computers kept on getting better and better.

This article talks about the tv genres that were starting because the tv was getting popular. It talks about some sitcoms that were on at the time. It talks about variety shows,  and anthology television series. It also talks about how the tv could be used for propaganda or to scare people. It talks about the red scare which was the fear of spread of communism. many feared that the large audiences commanded by entertainers might make the consequences of their political intentions all the more insidious.

This article starts off by telling the reader about when the car radio first came out, people saw it as a hazard. People were afraid that people would be too distracted on the radio and not pay enough attention to the road. There were even anti-radio  laws when car radios came out, and many people were behind them and believed they were dangerous. But over time it got smaller, easier to use, and less distracting overall, and the anti-radio laws basically went away. The rest of the article talks about how today's texting while driving problem is similar to the car radios back then.

This article is talking about how people used to view computers and how that changed over the years. In the early years of technology people viewed computers as a thing that big companies and scientists would use and even the big companies usually only had one computer. Later on people started viewing computers as something the wealthy or geeky people would have because it was too complicated. By 1980 Clive Sinclair invented the first at home computer for under £100. People then started to become familiar with the computer. This article explains how the concept of a computer has changed and is still changing today.

Conclusion

The radio took the world by storm in the 1920s, everyone tuning into their favorite station when they got home. The home televisions started to take over the radio for entertainment in the 1950s, everyone would watch their favorite show instead of listening to it. In the 1980s the early home computers starting to fill the homes of america, changing how people did their work or how they got their news.The radio, the television, and the home computer changed many lives for American people and how they got their entainment. This webquest should’ve gave you a good idea on how fast some of these pieces of technology evolved over time getting better and better as time goes by.
