Introduction

Explaining the significance of Historic Symbols in North Carolina:

*Focus: Meaning of Symbols and NC History in the 1800s

*Assessment: North Carolina Seal 

*Class Discussion: What does a symbol mean to you? Why are symbols important? What are some of the most significant symbols in the world? What do symbols represent? 

Task

Specific Topic Focus: 

-Students will be required to identify and explain the signifficance of the North Carolina Symbols, with a focus on the seal. 

-The North Carolina Seal will be evaluated in depth by looking at YouTube videos, viewing it on the interactive electronic board and coloring it in on a page.

-Students will be taken on a field trip to the North Caolina Museum of History and have to take notes for a reflection paper after.

-Moreover, we will read passages from the textbook discussing the significance of symbols in NC.

-The students will be provided with a comprehension test on the meaning and importance of the North Carolina Seal for homework.

Evaluation

*Informal Assessment: Create your own symbol and or logo that represents who you are and your cultural background with letters, pictures, words, and color. This will embrace cultural and ethnic diversity and lead to a great opportunity for students to express themselves creatively.

*Formal Assessments (Fill in on an assessment paper and do Quiz): Define the meaning of a symbol. When was the First NC Symbol Created? Why was the NC Seal invented? Who created the NC Flag and Seal? What is the meaning of the NC Seal's symbols?

Conclusion

-At the end of this content area students must be able to:

-Define what a symbol is

-Identify the North Carolina Seal

-Know who created the NC Flag- and Seal

-Identify the significance of the NC Symbols'

 

-Higher Level Questions:

*Is there a correlation between the NC symbols and symbols from other states? Why or Why not?

*What is the "United Carolina Flag" Why was it created? 

*Explain the meaning of the images within the NC Seal

-Food For Thought: 

*Write a reflection on how you would invent a flag or symbol for NC in the 21st Century. What would you incorporate and why?
