8SC.A.5 Gravity

Introduction

There once was an middle schooler who dreamed of going to space....Wait! Maybe you can go to space! or maybe you have to! Earth is being taken over, everyone is evacuating to the moon or mars! Don't pack just yet, we need to know more about gravity, mass, weight before we decide where to go!

Task

To make the big trip you must gather, evaluate and communicate the phenomena of the force of gravity. Conduct an investigation to determine what your trip from earth to space would be like, be sure to include gravity's affect on mass/weight and any other factors you find.

1. Gather information about gravity, mass and weight on earth.

2. Choose your destination: the moon or mars.

3. Use the information you gather to write a paragraph explaining what you've found and how your weight and mass will be affected by your destinations gravity.

4. create an illustration, story, or comic strip that depicts your findings and trip.

Process

Visit the websites and watch the video to conduct further research and gather much needed information. Be sure to answer the following questions. When you have gathered all of the necessary information write a paragraph detailing your trip by comparing and contrasting the changes in gravity through weight and mass.

What is gravity?

What are the two ideas you need to know about gravity?

What does gravity do?

How is mass and weight different?

Is there gravity in pace?

What is your weight on the moon? How does it differ from Mars?

How does distance effect gravity?
