All The Light We Cannot See Nationalism Web quest

Introduction

Throughout the book "All The Light We Cannot See", we see both Marie and Werner witness strong rises of Nationalism. Although these characters are in very different situations, they cope with this idea in similar ways.

Throughout this web quest, you will learn about Nationalism and it's effects.

The essential question of this web quest is "does Nationalism naturally have a positive, negative, or neutral connotation?"

Task

Your task is to look at multiple events that have resulted from rises in Nationalism. You will be given different historical events that have been a result of Nationalism or were influenced by Nationalism.

Process

First look at this article about Nationalism in the breakup of Yugoslavia. https://www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/serbian-and-croatian-nationalism-and-wars-yugoslavia

Next look at this article about Nationalism in resistance in Europe during Nazi occupation. https://www.britannica.com/place/France/France-since-1940#ref465495

Now answer the following questions:

1.  Why did the Serbians not want to be considered the same people as Slovenes and Croats?

2.  What did the Ustasa government do to the Serbian people between 1941 and 1945?

3.  How did Serbia view Croatita's self identity?

Conclusion

Now that you have seen a negative and a positive example of the effects of Nationalism, it is time for you to decide whether Nationalism is generally a good, bad or neutral idea. Also ask yourself and think about what you would do if you were placed in positions like Werner and Marie were. This can be used as an essential thinking point on your view of Nationalism.
