BE A SMART ENERGY CONSUMER

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how much electricity your home or school uses every day?

We use electricity almost all the time—from turning on the lights and fans to charging our phones and using computers. Although electricity makes our lives easier, excessive energy consumption can increase expenses and contribute to environmental problems.

In this WebQuest, you will become an Energy Detective. Your mission is to investigate how electricity is used, identify activities or appliances that may contribute to unnecessary energy consumption, and find practical ways to reduce energy use.

You will use information from reliable websites to investigate the problem and develop an energy-saving plan that can realistically be applied at home or in school.

Task

Your task is to create an Energy-Saving Action Plan.

Working individually or in a small group, you will:

  1. Research how electricity is produced and consumed.
  2. Identify common causes of unnecessary energy consumption.
  3. Investigate practical ways to conserve electricity.
  4. Examine the benefits of using renewable energy.
  5. Develop an action plan containing at least five realistic ways to reduce energy consumption.

Your final output should include:

  • A short explanation of the energy problem you investigated
  • At least five recommended energy-saving practices
  • The reason why each practice can help
  • Possible benefits to the household or school
  • A short reflection on how your proposed actions can help the environment

You may present your output as a poster, infographic, presentation, or one-page action plan.

Process

PROCESS

Step 1: Become an Energy Detective

Begin by learning about electricity and energy consumption.

Read the information provided in the Resources section. Identify at least three important facts about energy use that you did not know before.

Write these facts in your notes.

Step 2: Investigate the Problem

Think about your home or school.

Identify at least five activities or appliances that use electricity regularly. Examples may include:

  • Electric fans
  • Air conditioners
  • Refrigerators
  • Computers
  • Televisions
  • Lights
  • Phone chargers

Determine which activities may use a significant amount of electricity or may result in unnecessary energy consumption.

Step 3: Find Solutions

Research ways to reduce electricity consumption.

Look for practical strategies that can be applied by ordinary households or schools. Consider questions such as:

  • How can lighting electricity use be reduced?
  • How can air-conditioning use be managed?
  • Why is it important to turn off unused appliances?
  • How can energy-efficient appliances help?
  • What role can renewable energy play?

Choose at least five strategies that you believe are realistic.

Step 4: Explore Renewable Energy

Research at least two renewable energy sources, such as:

  • Solar energy
  • Wind energy
  • Hydropower
  • Geothermal energy

Explain briefly how each source can help provide cleaner energy.

Step 5: Create Your Energy-Saving Action Plan

Use what you learned to create your final output.

Your action plan should identify:

Problem → Proposed Action → Expected Benefit

Example:

Problem: Lights are sometimes left on in empty rooms.
Action: Turn off lights whenever a room is not being used.
Expected Benefit: Reduces unnecessary electricity consumption.

Step 6: Present and Reflect

Present your Energy-Saving Action Plan to the class.

After presenting, answer these questions:

  1. What did you learn about electricity consumption?
  2. Which energy-saving practice would be easiest for you to apply?
  3. Which practice might be difficult to implement and why?
  4. How can small changes in energy use contribute to a larger environmental benefit?

Evaluation

EVALUATION

Your Energy-Saving Action Plan will be evaluated using the following rubric:

Criteria Excellent – 4 Good – 3 Developing – 2 Beginning – 1
Research and Accuracy Information is accurate, relevant, and well-supported Information is mostly accurate Some information needs improvement Information is limited or inaccurate
Energy-Saving Strategies Provides 5 or more realistic and well-explained strategies Provides 5 strategies with adequate explanations Provides fewer strategies or limited explanations Provides very few relevant strategies
Use of Resources Uses reliable resources effectively Uses appropriate resources Uses limited resources Shows little evidence of research
Action Plan Plan is realistic, clear, and practical Plan is generally realistic and clear Plan needs more detail Plan is unclear or unrealistic
Presentation Very organized, creative, and easy to understand Organized and understandable Some organization problems Difficult to follow
Reflection Provides thoughtful and meaningful reflection Provides a clear reflection Reflection is brief Little or no reflection

Total: 24 points

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed your role as an Energy Detective.

Through this WebQuest, you investigated how electricity is used, explored ways to conserve energy, and learned about renewable energy sources. More importantly, you developed an action plan that can be applied in everyday life.

Energy conservation does not always require major changes. Simple actions, such as turning off unused lights and appliances, using energy-efficient equipment, and being more conscious of electricity consumption, can make a difference when practiced consistently.

Take a moment to reflect: What is one change you can start making today to become a more responsible energy consumer?

Remember, being energy-smart is not only about saving electricity—it is also about making responsible choices for our future and the environment.
