Introduction
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever stopped to wonder why our forests, seas, and gardens are filled with so many different kinds of living things? Imagine if one day, all the bees, birds, or even a single type of tree disappeared, what would happen to the rest of nature around us?
The amazing variety of life on our planet is what we call biodiversity, and the communities where these living things grow, interact, and thrive together with their surroundings are known as ecosystems. In this learning journey, we will find out just how important biodiversity really is, how living creatures and their environment rely on one another, and what happens when that natural connection is disturbed. Get ready, cause today we are about to step into the wonderful world of nature's diversity!
Task
TASK
Your adventure begins now!
Team up with your classmates to uncover what biodiversity truly means, discover why it is vital to every living being, and understand how it weaves all parts of an ecosystem together.
After your exploration, your team will design a creative Biodiversity Awareness Poster or Digital Brochure, one that shares what you've learned and inspires others to care for our natural world.
Finally, you'll proudly share your work and ideas with the class.
Process
PROCESS
Step 1: Discover What Biodiversity Truly Is
Explore these helpful guides to deepen your understanding:
• Resource 1: Understanding Biodiversity — WWF
• Resource 2: Why Our Rich Natural Heritage Matters — WWF Philippines / DENR
Keep a record of:
• Your own simple explanation of what biodiversity means
• Three key reasons it is precious to both people and nature
• Two serious challenges that put biodiversity at risk
Step 2: Uncover the Links Within Ecosystems
Select one amazing Philippine environment to study our Tropical Rainforests, vibrant Coral Reefs, or protective Mangrove Swamps.
• Identify five living (biotic) members of this community
• Identify five non-living (abiotic) elements that shape this environment
• Describe three important relationships showing how these elements rely on one another to survive
Step 3: Explore the Consequences of Losing Biodiversity
Reflect and find answers:
• What changes ripple through an ecosystem when one living thing vanishes?
• Explain in two to three sentences: Why does having a rich variety of life make nature stronger and more resilient?
Step 4: Share Your Message
Design an inspiring poster or digital brochure that includes:
• A meaningful title and the names of your team members
• What biodiversity means and why it matters
• The living and non-living parts of your chosen ecosystem
• The dangers that threaten our natural world
• Three practical ways we can all help safeguard biodiversity
• A closing thought to inspire others
Evaluation
EVALUATION
Your work will be assessed across four key areas, described below:
1. Understanding of Biodiversity
• Excellent: Clearly explains what biodiversity is, why it is important, and includes several examples of threats. Ideas are complete and easy to understand.
• Good: Gives a clear definition and mentions some reasons why biodiversity matters, but includes fewer examples.
• Fair: Provides only a simple or basic explanation; missing key reasons and examples.
• Needs Improvement: Explanation is unclear, incomplete, or has very few examples.
2. Understanding Ecosystem Interactions
• Excellent: Clearly describes how living and non-living things depend on one another, with specific examples of their relationships.
• Good: Explains most connections between biotic and abiotic components, though some details may be missing.
• Fair: Gives only limited or general explanations; does not clearly show how they rely on each other.
• Needs Improvement: Fails to show a clear understanding of how living and non-living things interact.
3. Final Output (Poster or Brochure)
• Excellent: Well-organized, creative, visually appealing, and easy to read. All required information is complete.
• Good: Neat, readable, and includes most required details.
• Fair: Somewhat disorganized or incomplete; a little difficult to follow.
• Needs Improvement: Messy, missing information, or hard to understand.
4. Teamwork and Presentation
• Excellent: Every member participates actively, speaks confidently, and answers questions clearly.
• Good: Most members contribute, and the presentation is clear and organized.
• Fair: Only some members participate; others are not involved in sharing or speaking.
• Needs Improvement: Very little effort from the group; one person does most of the speaking or work.
Conclusion
Bravo, Nature Explorer!!!
You've uncovered a wonderful truth: biodiversity is the heartbeat of our living planet. Every creature, every plant, every drop of water, and ray of sunlight fits together like a beautiful masterpiece nothing stands alone. If one piece goes missing, the whole creation loses its magic. But here's the most exciting part coz "YOU" are part of this masterpiece too. Your choices, your voice, and your care can help keep our natural world alive and thriving. Every living being has a place, and every single one of us has the power to protect it. Let's cherish life in all its forms because when we protect nature, we are protecting our greatest treasure.

This WebQuest is designed to match the MATATAG / K-12 Science curriculum. It invites students to discover answers on their own while building their ability to research, work together, and think deeply. Learners will explore our very own Philippine ecosystems and realize that biodiversity and nature are inseparable "to care for one is to protect the other".
