Introduction

After heating following compounds in an evaporating dish, what remains behind at the bottom of an evaporating dish?

  1. Milk

  2. Sugar

  3. Hair

The black substance remaining in each evaporating disk is called CARBON.

Make a list of all substances/objects that you use in daily life from morning till night and divide those substances into the columns in the following table

Process

Now look at the list of objects in the different columns and tell me which substances contain CARBON as their main constituent.

 

Evaluation

Different substances present in the last column contains carbon as an important constituents.

It contains foodstuffs, clothes, medicines, fuels, wooden objects etc.

Conclusion

Uses of Carbon in daily life

  • It makes up for 18% of the human body. Sugar, glucose, proteins etc are all made of it. 
  • Carbon in its diamond form is used in jewellery. 
  • Amorphous carbon is used to make inks and paints. 
  • Graphite is used as the lead in your pencils. 
  • One of the most important uses is carbon dating.
