Introduction
In organic chemistry course students are taught about three large chemistry sections - hydrocarbons (there is a WebQuest about naming hydrocarbons), natural substances and hydrocarbon derivatives. Two of these sections split in two smaller sections and today in this WebQuest it will be possible to learn something more about caboxylic acid and its derivatives.
In a video format, when the theory and practice are shown at the same time, it is easier to learn more about different topics and to understand them. I hope that it will be possible to understand the video material and to complete the tasks!
Task
Watch this video about Carboxylic acid and its derivatives and later answer to questions!
Process
Answer to these questions:
1. What are the derivatives of carboxylic acids?
2. What is carboxylic acid?
3. How do you number the parent chain?
4. Based on what principal do we get the root of the name of the carboxylic acid?
5. What is special about cyclic six?
6. What root usually is in the name of cyclic six?
7. How many carboxylic acid and its derivatives preperation methods are there?
8. What is the second carboxylic and its derivatives preparation method?
9. As what is used dry ether?
10. What must benzene ring have?
Evaluation
Answers to the questions:
1. The derivatives of carboxylic acids are esters, amides, anhidrides, acyl chlorides.
2. Carboxylic acids are all those organic compunds, which contain COOH group.
3. You start from the principal functional group - it gets the smallest number and you continue in the other way.
4. You count the carbon atoms in the parent chain and the number makes the root of the name (for example, if there are 5 carbons in the parent chain, then the root will be "pent").
5. It has six members and there is a special way to write the name of these types of compunds.
6. The root usually is "cyclo".
7. There are 3 methods - from alkene, from primary alcohol and from aldehyde.
8. The second method is from primary alcohol.
9. It is used as solvent, because in some cases we cannot use water otherwise the substance will be an alkane.
10. It must have hydrogen.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have completed the tasks about carboxylic acid and its derivatives! If you now think that it is fun and easy, I highly recommend learning more, because you will definitely benefit from it. One way, how to learn more about this, is watching more youtube video like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWIM0lxPiok, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kixxztbB2LM and other materials that you can find! I also suggest you to check out this page https://www.khanacademy.org/science/organic-chemistry as there is everything written about organic chemistry (and other subjects!) and might help you to learn more about these things!
Good luck and I hope you had fun today!
