Introduction: The Case of the Missing Sounds
Welcome, Sound Detectives! We have a big mystery to solve in our classroom. Some of our favorite words have lost their beginning sounds and I need your help to find them. As an official Sound Detective, you will go on a secret mission to explore the world of letters and listen to the sounds they make. Are you ready to use your listening ears?

- Can we find objects in our world that start with those sounds?
Task
The Task – Build Your Evidence Board!
Your Mission, Detectives!
To solve the mystery of the missing sounds, you need to build a Digital Evidence Board. Your job is to explore the world of letters and find the perfect matches for our silent words. By the end of our adventure, you will be sound experts who can teach others how to listen for the music in letters!
What You Will Do:
- Investigate: You will look at pictures of items in our world and listen to the sounds they make.
- Solve the Mystery: You will pick the correct letter that makes the starting sound for each picture.
- Create Your Report: You will put these matches together to show everyone that the mystery is solved!
What is the Result? Your final result will be a "Sound Detective Evidence Board". This board will show pictures of objects next to the letters they start with. You will use your board to show the class how you saved the missing sounds!
Process
The Process – Solving the Sound Mystery!
Attention, Sound Detectives! Follow these steps to find our missing sounds and complete your Evidence Board. Our Chief Detective (the teacher) will help us use our special tools!
Step 1: Look at the Clues (Whole Group with Diigo)
Before we start our search, the Chief Detective will show us our "Secret Evidence List" on a tool called Diigo.
- We will look at the bookmarks together on the big screen.
- We will see pictures and titles of the websites we are going to visit.
- The Chief Detective will show us how to click the links to find our letter sounds.
Step 2: Listen for the Sounds
Now it is time to investigate! Your group will visit these special places to hear what our letters sound like:
- Starfall: The ABCs: Click on a letter to hear its sound and see objects that start with that sound.
- Jack Hartmann's The Alphabet Letter Sound Game video: Try to say the letter sound before Jack does.
- Wordwall's Beginning Sound Quiz: Think you're ready? Take this quiz to see! Click on the letter that each picture starts with.
Step 3: Collect Your Evidence
As you listen, pick three sounds you want to put on your Evidence Board.
- Analyze: Which letter makes that sound?
- Search: Find a picture of something in our classroom or online that starts with that sound.
Step 4: Create Your Evidence Board
Now, use a Google Slide to put your evidence together.
- Place the Big Letter in the middle.

Evaluation
Section 4: Evaluation – Your Sound Detective Rank
To solve the mystery of the missing sounds, our Chief Detective (the teacher) will look at your group's Evidence Board and how well you used your detective skills. Since we are a team of Sound Detectives, you will be evaluated on how your group investigated the sounds and the final board you created.

What We Learned: Today, we discovered that every letter has its own special sound. By exploring the web, you learned how to:
- Identify the sounds that letters make.
- Match those sounds to the pictures and objects in our world.
- Create a report to share what you found with your friends.
