RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Task

Objective: Students will be able to recount what happened in the story and identify the characters, setting, and major events.

Process

Materials:

  • Chicken Little Sequencing Worksheet and Character Pictures
  • Scissors
  • Crayons
  • Gluestick

Before I begin the reading, I will ask students to pay very close attention to the characters in the story and the order in which they appear. I will ask students who they think the main character is going to be based on the title.

I will then read "Chicken Little", to the class.

While I am reading "Chicken Little" I will stop at different points and ask about the setting, problems that the characters are facing, and to remind me of the characters that Chicken Little has met along the way.

i.e. - Can anyone tell me where they think this story is taking place?, Why does Chicken Little think that the sky is falling?, Which characters has Chicken Little met this far?

When finished reading "Chicken Little", I will pass out a sequencing page to each student and a page that has outlines of each of the characters. The students will cut out the characters, color them in, and glue them in the correct order that Chicken Little met them in the story.

Evaluation

When students are finished with their sequencing sheets, we will review as a class, what order he met each of the characters. I will make sure that students understand the importance of recalling details of the story and assess their ability to identify key details, characters, setting, major events the characters face.

Conclusion

I will make sure that students understand how important it is to notice things around us before we react to a situation.

"If Chicken Little had just looked to see what hit him on the tail, he would have never thought that the sky was falling."
