In this webquest, you will explore some of the importants characters and themes within the novel Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. You will get to know the author, her inspiration for creating the story, and a little more about the genetic disorder Auggie has.

Task 1 Purpose:

Task 1: Learning about the author:
During this task, you will learn more about the author of Wonder, R.J. Palacio. As you are completing the following tasks, remember to read all the directions before clicking on any links or videos.

Step 3:
R.J. Palacio has a website that she uses to post about her life as a writer. For this step, you will read one of her blog posts that shares a comment from a fan along with her response to the commenter. Read the note and R.J. Palacio's response.
R.J Palacio says, "My hope is that [Wonder] helps children who look like your son, too, to have a better understanding and more empathy for children like your son."

You will visit the Children's Craniofacial Association's website to learn more about two syndromes. Click HERE and you will be taken to the website Pictured. You can choose to research any of the syndromes listed on the right.Only research two. If you're interested in researching more, you may do so at another time.

Task 3: Exploring themes and lessons in Wonder.
During this task, you will review the topic of themes before exploring themes and lessons in Wonder.

Kindness is the main theme in Wonder. It helps us realize that a small, simple act of kindness can make a big difference, and we have the ability to CHOOSE KIND. Final Challenge:
Think about everything you've learned from Wonder so far. Think about a lesson learned from the novel that you'd like to share with others. In your final challenge, you will plan and film a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to share with your peers.
What is a PSA?
A PSA is a message shared with the public with the purpose to raise awareness and/or change the public attitudes and behaviors towards an issue.
Watch the following PSA examples to help you understand what they are and how they work. Ask yourself, "What message is it sending?". In a PSA, there should be a clear message (what you want people to know) and how they can help (what you want people to do).
Now you are ready to plan your own public service announcement.
Evaluation
Your student packets will be evaluated for a participation grade.
Your public service announcement will be graded for a speaking and listening grade.
Both will be evaluated for participation, and collaboration.
