Civil War

Introduction

It took more lives than all other American Wars combined. It happened at 10,000 different locations across the nation. It ushered in more change than any other event from Lexington and Concord to 9/11. It has been the subject of more books than any other in topic in U.S. History. Why did the Civil War take place? Who supported it, why? Was the United States Civil War comparable to any other conflicts around the world in ancient or modern history? Who were the United States leaders in this War, how are they remembered? Who were leaders or rebels of other civil wars from around the world? How are they remembered? Find out!!!!

Task

Students will break into groups of four and develop roles. Using prior knowledge of the United States Civil War, research primary sources from the 1860's, why were Americans fighting each other, and who supported the fight? Identify and summarize some of the key people from these documents or from your own extended research if need be. Go and identify another Civil War that occurred throughout history in another country; why were they fighting, who were their leaders? Outline your research in Google Docs. Identify key people and outline their beliefs and what side they were on below. Provide visuals of these individuals next to their names in the outline.  Through your research of another Civil War, outline the key people, beliefs, and what side they were on. Provide visuals of these individuals next to their names in the outline. Groups will come together and draw comparisons and differences. The groups will present their findings to their classmates.

Conclusion

The United States Civil War is unique for where it stands in United States History. Through this Web Quest you should have been able to identify another civil war that took place elsewhere in the world at any point in history. Through comprehending primary sources, identifications, and critical thought process by comparing two different civil wars. You should be able to understand and identify key factors for why Civil Wars happen.
