Introduction
In Collections Unit 1 Culture/Belonging we read a variety of selections that involved the characters being from different cultures than we are. And they go through the struggles of trying to belong in the new country. The two selections that we chose where "My Favorite Chaperone" and "The Latehomecomer."
Task
The authors in both texts wanted to clarify and message through both selections. In the selection "My Favorite Chaperon" the author tries to clarify that family is everything, that they are willing to do anything for you. And in the selection "The Latehomcomer" the message is that nothing comes easy in life, if you want something you're going to have to work for it. Both selections tie into the theme- Culture/Belonging because, in both text the main characters are foreigners, and their culture from where they come form is different than the American culture. For example, in the reading "My Favorite Chaperon" Maya states that she was surprised to see her friend's father washing dishes, because where she comes from men don’t work in the kitchen. And in "The Latehomecomer' the main character gets sent a bracelet from her grandmother as a symbol of strength. In the reading "My Favorite Chaperon" a piece of figurative language used was "Like a robot, I gathered my books and followed Mr. Walsh." By saying that she means that she gathered her things she was very stiff and slow due to the nerves she had. And in the story "The Latehomecomer" it states "It was in a poor neighborhood with houses ready to collapse- wooden planks falling off, colors chipping away, sloping porches- and huge, old oak trees." By saying that, it means that the houses in that neighborhood are in extremely bad conditions.
Process
In order to answer the questions my group and I read both selections very thoroughly. After reading both selections we analyzed them looking for the answers to each question. Carefully searching for the correct answer. After finding the right answer we discussed whether it was actually the right answer, and explained why it was correct.
Conclusion
After reading both selections, we think that that authors of both texts did well in getting the message they wanted through to the readers. They really elaborated on working on the message they wanted to communicate, they added great details, and great examples. Both selections were well written, we would like to say that the authors did an exceptional job on these selections
