Comparing Communities

Introduction

For the past week in Social Studies, we have been talking about communities, what forms them, and what diverse communities across the world look like. Today, we are going to add to our understanding of communities by comparing a diverse culture from another part of the world to our own local culture. Our learning target for today is, 3.H.CE.1 Compare diverse world communities in terms of members, customs and traditions to the local community.

Task

You will be working with a partner to conduct research on a diverse community from another area of the world. It does not matter what part of the world this culture belongs to, as long as it is different from your own culture. Your task is to research a world community of your choosing, and then compare it to your own community. By comparing, I specifically mean discovering how these two communities/cultures are both similar AND different. Look into their customs, traditions, geography, etc. At the end of your research, you will summarize all the information you found into an online comparison chart. Feel free to insert your own artwork or helpful online resources about this culture. I have also attached a link below for you to get some ideas regarding comparison charts to choose.

Process

Here are the steps of this process, in order.

1. Choose a world community to research with your partner.

2. Research this community and write down key points you find concerning its' location, people group(s), environment, traditions, etc.

3. Upload research links and videos you found to be especially helpful and/or insightful.

4. Create a comparison chart of this community verses your own community. You and your partner will have creative liberty here, as long as it is appropriate.

I have provided a video below which explains the categories that form a culture for you to review:

Evaluation

You will be evaluated in the following categories:

1. Accuracy- all information presented in your written statements and on your comparison chart must be accurate.

2. Citing- all online informational resources used must be included on the bottom of your comparison chart.

3. Creativity- your digital chart should include creative elements and/or helpful videos and pictures.

Conclusion

Next week, you and your partner should be prepared to share your digital community comparison chart with a small group of your classmates.
