Looking around, decimals seem to be everywhere. When figuring out how much an object weighs, or the distance you went, etc. There are always moments where you need to know how to multiply decimals. In this WebQuest, you're going to learn how to multiply multi-digits with decimals. Then your next step will be to teach someone else how you understood multiplying digits decimals.

The Questions you are going to answer on the journey of the WebQuest will be the following:
- How can we multiply decimals correctly?
- Where does the placement of the decimal go?
- How can we check our answer if feeling unsure on an answer?
- When in real life situations do we use mulitplying decimals?

- Use the standard algorithm to multiply digits with decimals.
- Multiply positive decimals correctly, for real world problems with multiple numbers.
- Check your answer to verify if its correct.
- Be able to explain the method and steps to your mathematical problem solving.

- Create - You will be making a short video teaching others how to multiply decimals.
Task
Task!
Time to conquer the decimals! You will be working in a group of 2-4 to create a guide on multiplying with decimals for other students learning how to conquer the decimals. The group will create a 2-4 minute short video using the iPad or the video tool "Flip" for teaching how to multiply with decimals.
The video needs to have the following:
- Explanation of the steps.
- Exlplaination of decimal placement.
- Showing at least 3 examples, including a real-world problem.
- Show how to verify answer by "plugging in".

Step 1: Train to Conquer the Decimals!
As you work within your group, you are to start first from reviewing the notes on multiplication with decimals. Using the CPalms lesson from the Florida B.E.S.T. Grade 6 Math course focusing on:
- Decimal place value
- Multiplication
- "Plugging in" strategy
- General place value
Step 2 : Huddle with the other Conquerers!
Into your group, partner up or try solo to solve a multiplication with decimals problem. The only way to conquer it to show the math and the steps to solve it. Everyone will have a job for the video explaining the steps to solving the problem. (If 2-3 people, combine some jobs).
- Calculator: Job is to work through the problems, check the decimal placement, check the calculations.
- Explainer: Job is to create the step by step explanations for solving the problems. Directions easy enough for another peer to understand.
- Designer: Job is to organize the video. Provide the visuals of the examples of the solutions. Ensure the final video is easy to follow along.
- Presenter: Job is to help organize what is said and when. Record the video and present the final product. Make sure everyone's hard work in included and visible.
Step 3 : Teamwork!
Working in your group, you will use a asynchronous tool for collaborating. The tool will be a shared Onenote document, its available for each student under microsoft apps. Each document needs the following:
- Everyone's name in the group and their roles.
- Provide the examples of the multiplication problems and one real-world problem.
- Create an area for comments or questions where the teammates can respond to or ask.
- Track each entry and who contributed what into the project and whats completed.
Step 4 : Conquering real-world decimals!
Your group needs to create at least one real-world problem that can show decimal multiplication problems. There are many Ideas to choose from such as: Shopping, Games, and Food, Etc.
- Games: Ex. A brand new game costs $29.99 and you want to buy a copy for your friend's upcoming birthday. How much would you spend on both copies? $29.99 x 2 = ?
- Food: Ex. A small popcorn and soda for one person costs $10.00. Shelby and her 4 friends need to know how much they are spending in total on their food at the movies. $10.00 x 5 = ?
Step 5 : Conquer those decimals!!!
In your problems and the steps for solving. Follow these steps:
- Write out each problem.
- Multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers.
- Count the decimal places in the factors
- Place the decimal in the correct spot.
- Check your answer, by using the "Plug in" method.
- Decide whether correct or if needing revisions.
- Explain the logic and thinking for the steps of solving.
Step 6 : Combining the full product!!!
The final step for your group is to start putting all the materials together. The final product should ensure that a 6th grade peer would be able to use the video as a guide for learning to multiply with decimals. If the student had not learned this lesson and felt lost, this video should be a for sure explanation on how to correctly multiply with decimals. If these things are true then you are on your way to finishing the project! The final thing before turning in would be the group checklist: Ask
- Is there a clear example of multiplying with decimals?
- Was decimal placement explained clearly?
- Did the one real-world problem get included?
- Was there at least a common mistake shared for when multiplying?
- Is the project understandable for a 6th grade peer?
- Were the answers checked?

The biggest thing to rememeber it the steps to ensure you get the correct answer. Next would be to check your answer and making sure its making sense. Decimals show up all around and everywhere, shopping, money, cooking, and video games. Its important for people to understand how to mutiply with decimals!

Multiplying Decimals Topic
Topic Purpose:
The topic purpose of the WebQuest is to give the students a fun, real type of way of practicing multiplying decimals. In lieu of a boring worksheet with problems, this allows the students to work together and collaborate to understand the way to solve the problems and create something that can teach the skill to others. This project allows the students to explain their own thinking and steps and methodology to the topic. It creates a sense of personal sharing and thoughts to the project where the students share.
