Culture and Belonging

Introduction

For the previous weeks, students have been reading the two selections, “The Latehomecomer” and “My Favorite Chaperone.”

Task
  1. Students are to reread the two selections in the Collections 1 book, “The Latehomecomer” and “My Favorite Chaperone” and analyze the author’s purpose for both selections.

  2. Students will discuss how both authors connect the theme “Culture and Belonging.” Students will make sure to cite evidence in the text.

  3. Students will include and explain figurative language used in both selections.

  4. Students will create images to represent both authors’ message.

Process
  1. Students will discuss with a partner to analyze/annotate both selections, and write a paragraph explaining the author’s purpose in each selection.

  2. Students will also write a paragraph on how the author implied the theme ‘Culture and Belonging’ for both selections in their interactive notebooks.

  3. Students will create a chart on defining each type of figurative language and find an example of each in both selections.

  4. Students can draw or create a visual representation which will represent the author's message in both selections.  

Conclusion

Students should have a better understanding of the author’s purpose for both selections and how both selections relate to our theme, Culture and Belonging. They should also have a better understanding of figurative language.
