Introduction
Have you heard of “marenda”?
It is an important Dalmatian tradition. Our grandparents ate it in the field when they needed a break from hard work. It is much more than a meal – it’s time to kick back and relax and enjoy a meal with your friends and family in the middle of the day over a glass of “bevanda” – wine mixed with water.Dalmatian brunch is a traditional ritual, a way of life, social event when you can hear klapa singing and taste delicious but also very simple local dishes made of fresh ingredients.
OUTCOME:
Students create menus with typical dishes prepared for Dalmatian brunch.
Task
Your task for this webquest is to find out the meaning and impact of brunch in Dalmatia.
You and your group (5 students total) will become "experts" on this topic.
1. Work in a group and pretend to be at a conference to present the book" Dalmatian Brunch".
Each member of the group should perform a different role:
-
the historian (who will tell about the origins, the legends and the meaning of this meal)
-
the chef (who will explain some recipes, give advice and some tips)
-
the journalist (who will give information about the spread of this meal and its counterparts all around the world)
-
the public (that should pose questions to the experts)
-
the inn owner(who explains, delight and inspire hesitant customers to come and try what's brunch like)
2. After the conference all the participants are invited to the inn to taste Dalmatian brunch but .......
the historian is a vegetarian
the chef prefers boiled food
the journalist doesn't consume any alcohol
the inn owner is allergic to seafood
create a daily menu to cater for all of them (that will be the group's final product)
Process
Step 1:Form 3 groups of five members and assign them different roles. Each member of the group is responsible to find answers to one question connected with the task. The questions within a group are different. The students have to prepare a report and present it to other group members. But before presenting, they meet first with students who have the identical question to answer (one from each group). They are “experts” in their field and discuss their findings and prepare a presentation to their group members together. Then “experts” go back to their initial groups and present – this way they educate each other. The final step could be “testing” what they have learned about the topic. But the test should be a formative one – like quiz. This approach teaches pupils to collaborate and value
Step 2:In groups create attractive daily menus to cater all the participants regarding their eating habits or diet.Your descriptions should ensure them to try Dalmatian dishes eaten for brunch. That will be the group final product.
