Dare 2B Healthy

Introduction

Nowadays, young people find themselves living in a rather volatile time. A time of great changes but also a time of many choices.

For some teens, things are clear; however, many others struggle and often end up opening the “wrong doors”, which will affect their lives forever. Indeed, the decisions you make as a young person will shape your whole life, sometimes to the point of self-destruction.

There are several social issues facing teens today that other generations didn't have to deal with. Perhaps it is even more difficult to stay healthy nowadays than a few decades ago.

Thus, we must ask ourselves - "How healthy am I?" or even "What am I willing to do in order to be healthy?"

Do you "Dare 2B Healthy ?".

Task

Public Awareness Campaign to Promote Healthy Lifestyles - Dare 2B Healthy

  • You are going to participate in an international project on how to promote healthy habits among teenagers. The name of the project is “Dare 2B Healthy”.
  • In groups of 4 you must create a poster, a leaflet or a commercial to give information on the topic and also to promote healthy habits.

Operationalization

TASK 1

Brainstorming - Main diferences between "Traditional Group Work" (TGW)  Vs. "Collaborative Group Work" (CGW).

TASK 2

Organisation of 5 groups of co-responsibility – 4 members each.

Teacher chooses four students, each of those will take turns and choose a second person, then that person will choose the third member and finally the last one is also chosen by the previous member.

TASK 3

Collaborative Group Assignment - shared responsibilities.

Each group will be assigned one of the topics:

(1) (Un)healthy eating;

(2) Teenage violence;

(3) Depression and suicide among teens;

(4) Active living Vs. Sedentary behaviour;

(5) Risky behaviours among teens - addictions.

  • Main tasks: research; selection; organization of materials and preparing a final product to display in class – a leaflet, a poster or a commercial.
  • Before you choose, learn about these three diferente styles (Check the features of each by reading /analysing some documents and examples provided by the teacher).

  • Any of these products MUST INCLUDE information about the following sub-topics:
     (1) Contextualisation – the problem (some facts and figures);
     (2) Main causes and consequences;
     (3) What needs to change – solutions;
     (4) Helplines/ lifelines or emergency and support services.

  • Each member will deal with only ONE of these sub-topics.
  • The group must decide on the final product – leaflet, poster or commercial.
  • Together you must decide which materials you need, as well as techniques you want to use to create the final product.

  • Each member of the Group researches the assigned topic to find accurate information that must be carefully selected and compilated.
  • Remember to choose interesting pictures that are truly related to the topics discussed.
  • It is everybody's responsibility to edit the work done, once it is finished, and of course to produce a final revised version which will be presented in class.
  • Then create a poster, a leaflet or a commercial.
  • Display your work in class and prepare an oral presentation by all the members of the group.
