Introduction
You live in a world filled with objects. All objects are either shapes or forms. A shape is a two-dimensional area that is defined in some way, it is usually flat.
Task
Before You begin the hands on portion you will answer some questions.
What is 2D Design?
What makes a good design?
What are the elements and principles of design?
You are going to make 3 DIFFERENT designs using only 8 shapes placed into an 8x8” square that you are going to draw. The first design will use only one color, the second & third design will use two colors. Grading will base upon making sure the square is 8 inches all around, the square is centered on a piece of 12x18 sheet of paper, the 8 pieces are cut correctly & are not placed outside the 8"x8" square. That’s all lines are drawn LIGHTLY so that you can erase at the end & you piece is clean and neat. Pay attention to space when laying out your design. If you’re not sure if the design is going to work, check with me before gluing pieces to paper.
Process
1. Take a sheet 12x18 white drawing paper and measure an 8x8 inch square in the center of it. You’ll want to make marks at the top and bottom of the paper when measuring to make sure you have a straight line.
A. If you hold the paper horizontally or landscape view the measurements to center your square are at 5” and 13”
B. If you hold the paper vertically or portrait view the measurements to center your square are at 2” and 10”
2. Repeat above step on two more sheets or white paper so when you’re done you’ll have 3 sheets with an 8” square centered.
3. Once all three papers have the square drawn on it LIGHLY drawn another line at the 4” mark to make your self a plus sign or 4 boxes inside the larger square.
4. Write your name and period in pen on the BACK of each sheet
5. Now select 3 different color 6” inches colored construction paper squares. Understand 1 color is going to be its own design the other 2 colors are going to make two different designs together so pay attention to how the colors might look next to one another.
6. Once you selected your 3 colors drawn lines dividing them into 4 even square to look like the larger squares you drew earlier.
7. On the center point where the lines meet, draw a circle that touches every edge of the square. You want to come as close as possible to the edge of the square.
8. Carefully cut along the straight lines and the arcs so that you have 8 pieces of colored construction paper.
9. Now try and form a design with the 8 shapes on the 8x8 square of white paper. Using one color only. Once you like your design paste down and go to the next 2 designs.
10. You are going to do the same steps as above but this time choose ANY 8 of the 16 pieces left over and make a design.
11. With remainder 8 pieces make another design.
Evaluation
Check design that students are forming.
-Check to make sure measurements are correct.
-Check to make sure picture is glued with rubber cement.
-Check to make sure picture is clean.
