In this webquest we will unveil the CAUSES, EFFECTS, and PREDICTION METHODS of future EARTHQUAKES!!

Task
Let's Get Started!!!
Your Task will be centered around the number 3!!!
Your Teacher will divide your class into groups of 3 students. If there is an uneven number of students and someone is left out, that person will be able to select which group they would like to work with.
Each group member will pick from one of the following questions to answer. If there's a group of 4 members, two members will work to answer question number 3 TOGETHER!!!

3. What are 3 prediction methods for future Earthquakes.

Our planet earth is made up of tectonic plates pieced together along faults, we may think we are on solid ground but in reality it's unstable below the surface. The instability can lead to earthquakes, earthquakes can range from just a few seconds to minutes, and sometimes can't be felt or they can cause major destruction.

When these tectonic plates attempt to move in opposite directions, rub against each other, or break they release energy that can slip through the cracks. But sometimes the pressure from this energy release can become to overwhelming for these faults to contain, the stress and pressure lead to slips causing seismic waves like vibrations, which cause the ground to shake, or earthquakes.
Some of these earthquakes can be small and not felt by us, causing no damage. Others can have stronger seismic waves that can cause some damage to certain structures and properties, but they mainly just frighten people. Now the earthquakes with intense major shaking can cause catastrophic destruction, and can lead to other natural phenomenons, such as tsunamis, flooding, and landslides. Even though earthquakes range from minor to catastrophic, and may not affect some, others aren't so lucky, and these damages can affect the economy, our environments, properties, and lives.
Scientist are using seismometers, which monitor vibrations below the surface, laser beams that detect plate movement, past data collected, and the levels of radon gas being released, as methods to predict future earthquakes. Not only is monitoring our earth's crust for future events important but, in order to prevent major damage in these future earthquakes, engineers are coming up with better construction methods. They are using stronger materials for structures, for example stronger foundations, and steel beams, so these building and the people in them, can survive earthquakes.
