Ecosystems: Biotic and Abiotic Components

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why plants grow better in some places than others? Why do animals live where they do? Every living thing on Earth depends on both living and non-living things to survive. In this WebQuest, you will explore the amazing relationship between biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components of an ecosystem — and discover how they work together to keep life going! 

Task

Your mission: Become an Ecosystem Investigator! You will work in small groups to research, identify, and explain the difference between biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors in an ecosystem. Then, your group will create a visual poster or digital presentation showing how these two groups interact and depend on each other. You will present your findings to the class.

Process

Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1 — Learn the Definitions
Visit the resources below to understand what biotic and abiotic mean. Create a simple chart listing 10 examples for each category.

Step 2 — Explore Real Ecosystems
Choose ONE ecosystem: Forest, Ocean, Desert, or Garden. List 5 biotic and 5 abiotic components found in your chosen ecosystem. Explain how they interact — how does sunlight help plants? How does water help animals?

Step 3 — Investigate What Happens When One Changes
Predict: What happens if the water disappears? If sunlight is blocked? If all plants die? Write 2–3 sentences explaining how abiotic factors affect living things and vice versa.

Step 4 — Create Your Final Output
Make a poster or slide presentation with: Title & group members, Definitions + examples, Ecosystem diagram showing interactions, and a conclusion: Why do we need both biotic and abiotic components?

Evaluation

Your work will be evaluated based on four key areas. First, for definitions and examples — an excellent work will show clear and accurate explanations with ten or more examples for each category, while a good work will have seven to nine examples, a fair work will include four to six examples, and work needing improvement will have unclear definitions with very few examples. Second, for interaction explanation — an excellent response clearly explains how biotic and abiotic factors depend on and affect one another, a good response explains most interactions, a fair response has limited explanation, and work needing improvement shows no clear explanation of their relationships. Third, for the visual or final output — an excellent work is well organized, creative, and easy to understand, a good work is neat and readable, a fair work is somewhat disorganized, and work needing improvement is hard to follow. Fourth, for teamwork and presentation — in an excellent work, all members participate and speak clearly, in a good work most members participate and the presentation is clear, in a fair work some members do not participate, and work needing improvement shows little effort from the group.

Conclusion

Great work, Ecosystem Investigator! You have discovered that no living thing can survive alone. Biotic and abiotic components are deeply connected — plants need sunlight and water; animals need plants and air; everything relies on the non-living environment to live. Understanding this helps us see why protecting our environment means protecting both nature AND the living things within it. Every part matters! 💚
