Stage 2 Year 4 - Eleebana Public School 2017 - First Contacts

 

This web quest has been designed for Year 4 students at Eleebana Public School to conduct research on the topic 'First Contacts'.

Read and work through each of the tasks included in this unit. The tasks are listed in the 'task' tab and the suggested websites for you to visit are listed in the 'process' tab. The appropriate websites links are provided for you to research your topics and build the knowledge required to complete each task. Time management is important so try to stick to the amount of time guide for each task. If you spend too much time on one task you may not get achieve a high quality of work in all tasks.

Task

Explorers

  • Reasearch the journey of an explorer up to the 18th Century and show any impact this voyage has had on world society eg. Vasco da Garma, Columbus, Magellan
  • Investigate the journey of early Australian explorer and discuss the question "Who discovered Australia?" eg. Dirk Hartog, Abel Tasman, William Dampier, Willem Jansz, Captain Cook

First Fleet and colony establishment

  • Identify reasons for the voyage of the First Fleet
  • Describe the establishment of the British Colony at Port Jackson
  • Investigate the everyday life of one of the following, a soldier, convict, ex-convict or official, who sailed on the First Fleet and lived in the country

Aboriginal perspective

  • Create a timeline to show that the Aboriginal people have been in Australia for more than 50000 years
  • Investigate the Aboriginal way of life
  • Describe the nature of of the contact between Australia's first peoples and others
  • Explain what the term 'terra nullius' means and how this affected the British attitude to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Outline the impact of early British colonisation on Australia's first peoples and their country
