The Brest fortress is located in (any of these answers can be any of these) USSR, Soviet Union, Belarus, Byelorusian SSR.
-
The fact that it is a fortress, along with the stiff resistance given by the Soviet Troops defending it. The Soldiers and commanders did not surrender immediatly and decided to keep fighting for their cause.
-
The defenders greatly lacked Water. Many of them died attempting to get to go to the rivers surrounding the fort to gather water. Food, medical supplies, ammunition, back up, communication with main Soviet Army was also lacking greatly. The Red Army had already retreated to Minsk.
-
No they did not. Germans had machine guns mow them down and swiftly set up to shoot at them. All attempts at breaking through were easily repelled due to lack of upper ground, weapons and soldiers.
-
Either attempt to escape, escape one by one, attack, or surrender. Each of the groups/squadrons throughout the Fortress gave different orders. Some attempted to escape one by one, some just surrendered, others died fighting.

It was the first time the Germans had to retreat during the War (against USSR), the first major battle of the eastern front (in the early days), the first major defense the Soviets had in the first days of the war (not the fortress but fighting the germans). Till the 29th of June. By then most of the fighters, commanders and people had surrendered or died fighting. However as late as July 23rd one group of soldiers and commander continued to fight until surrender. It has been reported that there was still pockets of resistance well into The Summer of 1941 and Autumn, though it is shaky information at best. One of the most famous messages from The Defense is from July 1941 from a defender still in the fortress, who inscribed “I'm dying but I won't surrender! Farewell, Motherland. 20.VII.41.” (VII = July)
