Healthy Eating

Introduction

Nowadays, children do not care too much about what they eat. They prefer to eat fast foods and some snacks rather than eating vegetables and fruits or some nutritious foods. However, it is important to eat healthy foods for a healthy body. Your duty is to prepare a poster to raise the students’ awareness about the importance of healthy eating.

Task

The main purpose of this activity is to help you learn more about the importance of eating healthy foods. You will prepare a poster to raise your friends' awareness about this topic.

To create your poster, you will;

2. watch a video about healthy eating,

3. learn about the nutrients and their functions,

Conclusion

The students gained more information about an important topic which is healthy eating. Students worked both individually and in pairs. This way, they had a chance to work on their own to do research and practice group-work skills like collaboration and division of work.

They also practiced presentation skills by preparing a poster and presenting it in front of the class. Presentation was a good way for the students to practice speaking skills. It was also good for the teacher to see the students' improvement.

Student Profile: There are 20 students in the class. They are 5th grade students and their proficiency level is A2. They are studying at ODTÜ Geliştirme Vakfı Okulları. They are learning English as a foreign language. They have four English lessons per week.

This webquest is designed to raise the students' awareness about healthy eating for an EFL classroom. However, it can be also used in other subjects such as biology with some changes, because the topic is also closely related to nutrients.

All students need to have an access to the internet since this webquest contains a lot of links to some internet sites. It will take 4 sessions to complete this webquest with the presentations, but it can be given as a term project for English course.

This WebQuest will contribute to students since they will have a chance to,

  • recycle some vocabulary items related to foods,
  • be aware of the importance of healthy eating and make their friends aware,
  • they will prepare a healthy diet to follow it,
  • practice reading, listening and speaking skills with various tasks.
