Gaseous exchange grade 11

Introduction

Hi everyone.

Before we start with our lesson for today. I want you to do a little exercise where you are. I want you to inhale as much air around you. Count from 1-5 and then inhale. Hold the air in and count from 1-5 again and  then exhale. Do this 2/3 times and notice what happens in your chest. The demonstration/exercise brings us to our topic of Gaseous exchange. What you just did is called breathing.

Please note of the following terms as they can be confusing to differentiate.

Breathing: mechanicamovement of air in and out of the lungs.

Cellular respiration release of energy from glucose in the presence of oxygen.

Gaseous exchange exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide across a gaseous surface.

Task

Objectives

  • Understand the importance of a gaseous exchange system.
  • Learners should be able to differentiate between breathing, cellular respiration and gaseous exchange.
  • know and understand the need for a gaseous exchange .
  • Learn the different structures and surfaces used in gaseous exchange.

Task

1.Match the term in column A with the definition in  column B.

A

B

Breathing

The release of energy from glucose in the presence of Oxygen.

Gaseous exchange

Process whereby air moves into and out of the lungs

Cellular respiration

The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide across a gaseous exchange surface.

2.Name the product that forms as a results of too much carbon dioxide in the  body.

3.Is the product in (2) essential for the body? State the reason for your answer.

4.Why is photosynthesis important to humans?

5.State if the statement is true or false. Fishes use the mouth for gaseous exchange.

6.Advantage of a moist surface.

Process

The below diagrams shows that difference of these concepts and where each process takes place.

Evaluation

1.

Cellular respiration release of energy from glucose in the presence of oxygen
Breathing mechanicamovement of air in and out of the lungs.
Gaseous exchange The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide across a gaseous exchange surface.

2. Carbonic acid

3. No. Carbonic acid is toxic to the body

4. Photosynthesis is important to the human body as it produces Oxygen as one of its by-products. Humans breath in Oxygen.

5. False. Fishes use their gills for gaseous exchange.

6. Oxygen dissolves in the moisture of the skin to the surface blood vessels to the rest of the body.
